‘Alt. Vibes! A Spring in the step around Roehampton’ is a University of Roehampton, Wandsworth Council and community supported initiative funded by the Research England Strategic Priorities Fund. In lieu of a planned parade through Alton Estate and the University of Roehampton campus, this is an online performance featuring university partner the World Heart Beat Music Academy and their Second Line Band, and the London School of Samba.
World Heart Beat Music Academy is an independent charity offering a place of learning, nurturing and community. Our open admissions policy means there are no barriers, financial or other – it provides music education for young people aged 5 to 25, with free music lessons and instruments to those in need.
The London School of Samba was founded in 1984. It is the first samba school in the UK and performs regularly at the Notting Hill Carnival.
This project has been developed by Dr Jonathan Skinner (Anthropology unit, University of Roehampton) and Ms Antonia De Lima (Alton Regeneration Project Officer for Wandsworth Council). It adds community engagement to existing anthropological research on festivals and carnivals in the Caribbean and Madagascar.
