Reflection on practical skill on ECG analysis

On May 21, 2024, I participated in a simulated placement focused on electrocardiography (ECG) and ECG analysis. This experience deepened my understanding of ECG principles, including the significance of various waves and intervals such as the P wave, QRS complex, and T wave. Learning the proper technique for placing electrodes and acquiring a clean ECG recording was crucial. I practiced positioning the electrodes accurately and preparing the patient to minimize artifacts.

The simulation enhanced my skills in interpreting ECG results. I identified normal sinus rhythms and common abnormalities like atrial fibrillation, tachycardia, and myocardial infarction. I also learned to calculate heart rates using the ECG strip. Applying this knowledge in various clinical scenarios underscored the practical importance of ECG in patient assessment and management.

This simulated placement significantly boosted my confidence and competence in handling ECG procedures and analysis. The hands-on experience bridged the gap between theory and practice, preparing me for real-world clinical situations. Moving forward, I aim to continue practicing and updating my knowledge to master this essential diagnostic tool.

* Prioritise people: By enhancing my ECG skills, I can better diagnose and manage patients, ensuring they receive timely and accurate care.
* Practise effectively: The hands-on experience improves my practical skills, allowing me to perform ECGs more effectively and interpret the results accurately.
* Preserve safety: Accurate ECG interpretation is crucial for identifying cardiac issues early, which can significantly impact patient safety and outcomes.
* Promote professionalism and trust: Demonstrating competence in ECG procedures and analysis builds trust with patients and colleagues, reinforcing my professionalism in clinical practice.
