Reflection on Learning Activity (include model of reflection e.g. Driscoll or Gibbs):

Today we were discussing the Respiratory System.

Mentioned above system include:

  • Nose
  • Mouth
  • Throat
  • Voice box
  • Windpipe
  • Lungs

Air enters respiratory system through the nose or mouth.

The respiratory system is responsible for delivering oxygen O2 and removing carbon dioxide CO2.Respiratory System also allows us to talk and smell.

Oxygen is required by our cells to make energy. It is brought in via the lungs and deliver to the cells by the bloodstream.

Carbon Dioxide is the waste product carried from cells via the lungs.

Process of movement Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide in and out from the cells is called diffusion.

By the end of the session, we were able to:

  • Describe the function of the respiratory system
  • Name the key structures of the respiratory system
  • Define diffusion
  • Explain the process of the gas exchange
  • Explain the role of the respiratory system in homeostasis

During the session I gained more confidence to define a new terminology such us:

  • Anosmia (lack of the sense of smell)
  • Dyspnoea (difficult or painful breathing)
  • Bronchoscope (instrument to examine the bronchi)
  • Laryngitis (inflammation of the larynx)
  • Pulmonary metastases (lang secondaries)
  • Pneumonia (severe infection of lungs)
  • Rhinoplasty (cosmetic surgery/  nose job)

Afternoon session, has been dedicated to the Academic Writing L 4

By the end of the session each student was able to:

– understand the requirements for writing at L 4

– be able to describe the stages of writing an assignments

– understand the importance of referencing

We also found the deadline for submission our first assignments.

Each day brigs us closer to the exams and assignments submission. Creates more panic and confusion. If we will be able to organise our duties, prioritise our responsibilities and tasks, we will be able to get rid of the confusion. Revising each module at the most convenient time will help us to stay up to date with obtained  knowledge , gain confidence to  answer all exam questions successively.

Reflection on Learning Activity (include model of reflection e.g. Driscoll or Gibbs):

On today’s session we were discussing:

NMC Code, Professionalism and values.

We found out, that NMC Code has been updated in 2018.The reason for updating The NMC Code was the new Healthcare professional, added to the nursing fields called, Nursing Associate.

We defined four principles of NMC Code, such us:

– Practice effectively (communicate, work as a team)

– Prioritise people (putting people first, treat them with respect, dignity and compassion)

– Preserve safety (Duty of Candour, understand limitation)

– Promote professionalism and Trust

We discussed the 6Cs such us:

  • Care
  • Compassion
  • Competence
  • Communication
  • Courage
  • Commitment

During our session we promote British Values such us:

  • Respect the culture, beliefs of others
  • We know that we are special
  • We treat everyone equally
  • We understand right from wrong
  • We try to help others
  • We listen and respect other’s opinion
  • We understand the consequences of our action
  • We respect the role of people who help us

This session helped me to defined and understand the meaning of:

  • 6Cs,
  • The NMC Code
  • Professionalism

I strongly encourage others and myself to:

  1. To be professional, respectful and mindful at workplace, when dealing with patients. As we are there for them, to support public needs and respect them at many stages.
  2. To be aware of strong power of social media. Some type of activities posted on social media can destroyed our career and reputation of our profession. Can easily destroyed trust which nation always had towards Public or Healthcare workers.
  3. Do not abuse your power over the patient, who put a lot of trust in us and their lives in our hands. Hoping, that we will be able to help them in many ways or in many life aspects.

We also discussed System, Cells and Homeostasis. The aim of this session was to give an overview of the body system, types of cells and defined the meaning of homeostasis.

By the end of the session each participant was able to:

  • Recognise an anatomical position
  • Identify different types of cells
  • Define homeostasis
  • Named Body fluids
  • Recognise the normal body temperature range (36.9 – 37.9)

Attending each session at Roehampton University gives me a very strong courage to do well at workplace and keep expanding my knowledge and skills, serving our nation. Being competent, respectful and compassionate about work which I do on the daily bases, providing an excellent care for NHS Patients.

Today we were discussing:

SWOT Analysis and SMART objectives.

We learned how to use SWOT analysis for setting Smart objectives, which line up with strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats.

Smart objective stands for:

S – Specific

M – Measurable

A – Achievable

R – Relevant

T – Time Based

How to do SWOT analysis:

  • Gather the data you need internally and externally
  • Assess your internal strengths and weaknesses
  • Asses your external opportunities and threats.

We went to the simulation room, and we were learning how to check respiratory rate manually.

Reflection on Learning Activity (include model of reflection e.g. Driscoll or Gibbs):

Today we were discussing Module 1.

Subject: Understanding Health and Illness across the lifespan – CNR020C111A

Lifespan – is defined as duration of existence of individual from birth to death.

The duration of human life is influenced by:

  • genetics
  • environment
  • lifestyle

Lifespan development is a main consideration within nursing care. The term refers to the full process of human development from concept to death. It is a holistic approach to understand all the physical, cognitive, emotional and social changes that people experience during each stage of life.

Learning outcome of this session is to identify:

– stages of lifespan

– factors of healthy lifespan

– factors which have influence on healthy and unhealthy lifespan

Another subject discussed on today’s session: Introduction to A & P

System cells and homeostasis.

Homeostasis is a self – regulating process. Maintaining stability, while adjusting to the conditions, which are the best for organism survival. If homeostasis is successful, then life continues. If homeostasis process is unsuccessful. It results in a disaster or death of the organism.

Homeostasis, maintain stable condition inside the cell or an entire organism.

Example of homeostasis:

  • body temperature regulation
  • blood pressure regulation
  • blood sugar regulation

Type of system cells

  • Stem cells.
  • Red blood cells.
  • White blood cells Eosinophils. Basophils. Lymphocytes.
  • Nerve cells.
  • Neuroglial cells.
  • Muscle cells Skeletal muscle cells. Cardiac muscle cells. Smooth muscle cells.
  • Cartilage cells.

Aim of this session was to provide an overview of the body system and types of cells and the concept of homeostasis.

Session helped to understand a few aspects of the lifespan. Identify the meaning and importance of homeostasis and system cells.

KSBs addressed:

K10: Understand the principles of epidemiology, demography, and genomics and how these may influence health and well-being outcomes

K11: Understand the factors that may lead to inequalities in health outcomes

On today’s session we were able to discuss the Role of the Nursing Associate. We identify the difference between HCA, NA, RN. During a group work we were preparing a presentation regarding certain topics such as:

  1. Accountability –  being responsible for your thoughts, words and actions.
  2. Professionalism – conduct, behaviour and attitude of someone in a work environment.
  3. NMC Code – The Code presents the professional standards that nurses, midwives and nursing associates must uphold to be registered to practise in the UK. It’s structured around four topics:

–  prioritize people

–  practice effectively

– preserve safety

– promote professionalism and trust

We were discussing Study Skills Seminar. We found out how to read a paper/ Soler to Surety.

We indicate which parts of newspaper article are important to read in order to get a proper information:

– title

– abstract

– conclusion

We have been introduced to the VARK. Each student has done the VARK Questionnaire to identify the individual learning type. Most of us are Multi – Model Learners

This session helped me to understand the difference between the Healthcare Professional roles and accountability which are assigned to the certain role in nursing fields.

I will be more confident in setting up the high standards at workplace and showing to others, that I care about every aspect of my job. Because my goal is to be registered to practice as a Nurse in the UK.

KSBs addressed:

K1: Understand the Code: Professional standards of practice and behaviour for nurses, midwives and nursing associates (NMC, 2018), and how to fulfil all registration requirements

K2: Understand the demands of professional practice and demonstrate how to recognise signs of vulnerability in themselves or their colleagues and the action required to minimise risks to health
