Title of learning activity: Ethical and Legal Considerations (Accountability, Capacity, Consent, Safeguarding) .
Today I had a lecture on the ethical and legal considerations that underpin the provision of safe, empathetic and professional care. As a nursing associate, I will have to manage complex situations where accountability, responsibility, legal capacity, consent and safety are important. the nursing profession is guided by a comprehensive set of ethical, professional, and legal mechanisms that ensure nurses provide safe, effective, and compassionate care.
Ethics in the nursing profession focuses on patient rights, moral principles, and the provision of compassionate care {(NMC) Code of Conduct; Core Ethical Principles (Autonomy, Beneficence, Non-maleficence, Justice) and Ethical Decision-Making}.
The legal framework ensures that nursing practice is lawful, protects patient rights and clearly defines liability {Safeguarding Laws; The Data Protection Act 2018 (GDPR); The Human Rights Act 1998; The Health and Social Care Act 2008; The Duty of Care }.
As a Nursing Associate I need to combine the knowledge of ethical, professional and legal mechanisms and behave as a good moral example to become a trusted and vital healthcare professional.

Title of learning activity: Basic Life Support – practical skills.
This afternoon I joined the practical session with care delivery during the life threatening situations (i.e. during cardiac arrest, lack of breathing and choking). The Basic Life Support (BLS) algorithm is nothing more than first aid instructions in a nutshell. This requires performing several steps one after the other, in exactly this order. This is important not only because of the correctness of the procedure, but also because it can be done automatically without thinking “what now?”
BLS algorithm – step by step (DRS ABCD)
- D for Danger – Assessment of the safety of the incident scene.
- R for Response – Checking the injured person’s reaction.
- S for Send (or Shout) for HELP – Call for help if there is no response.
- A for Airway – Checking if their airway is clear
- B for Breathing – Checking for 10 seconds if is breathing
- C for CPR – Begin cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) if the patient is not breathing.
- D for Defibrillator – If defibrillator is available use it.
It is important that sequence is changing for babies, infants or children. We are adding 5 rescue breaths, and check for response. There is a difference as well with tilting the chin because we don’t want collapse airway. For babies we are using 2 fingers for chest compressions, for infants might be 2 hand – 2 finger chest compressions, for a child one hand.
