Programming Using Scratch

Todays session focused on the process of programming using a range of software, apps, physical devices and websites.

This was the first time I had used a programming software such as Scratch and thoroughly enjoyed it:

I aim to develop my proficiency of using programming apps and software, so that I am very confident teaching this to children.

IT during BSE1

Throughout BSE1 I have developed my SMART Notebook skills by creating slides for the majority of my lessons that I taught. I utilised features such as the reveal curtain, timers and inserting text and pictures. I found the ability to write onto the slides during the lesson very beneficial for brainstorming ideas with the Yr6 class, as shown below:

I also instructed a lesson where children had to create trifold leaflets based on the topic of healthy bones and muscles. The children learnt how the page organisation of a trifold worked and successfully created leaflets which were interesting and informative.

As the internet was so accessible at home and at school, this enabled me to use resources online to aid my teaching, such as the maths website www.mathsbot.com; an online generator for maths starters. I used this frequently at the beginning of maths lessons.

IT and the internet has been very beneficial throughout BSE1.

 

 

Computational Thinking

This week I learnt about the idea of Computational Thinking, which I discovered is closely linked to Mathematical Thinking and other forms of logical reasoning.

The resources shared in class are extremely valuable, and some of the videos, such as the ‘Sandwich Bot at #casconf16″, found at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFUs3GvMSVc, I intend to use when I have the chance to teach this topic.

The activities we engaged in will also be very useful to develop children’s Computational Thinking, and can be adapted to different levels of ability, such as the ‘How to make/Write down the recipe’ activities and also the ‘Guess the number’ game.

Session 2: Interactive Whiteboards

Today’s session gave me the opportunity to explore the power of Interactive Whiteboards and Smart Notebook software. Being able to test out the software myself, and with the support of my peers around me to discover different functions, this led me to understand how the software can be used in many contexts.

Immediately after opening the software I decided that it would be interesting to create a “interactive document” as though I was planning a lesson. My initial idea was a history/geography lesson, finally choosing ‘The Victorians’ as a suitable topic.

I began by choosing a background that related to the topic, and used this background throughout the “interactive document”.

I subsequently created a title page, followed by the learning objectives.

Although I was unable to finish the document, I would have liked to be a bit more creative and use the SMART Notebook software to its full potential. I would continue on to create a slide of “what do The Victorian’s eat?”, with many pictures that have to be sorted into the categories ‘rich’ and ‘poor’, and “how many courses do they have in a meal?” with an array of numbers, with only one correct.

I aim to download this software onto my laptop, and continue to develop and improve my skills for future use as a teacher!
