With only a full day and a half before my mum and nan are going back home, I was able to miraculously get myself up reasonably early and managed to get down to them for about midday. Mum thought it would be a good idea to get an open tour bus, as one, you learn a little about the city and secondly, we can hop on and off as we want, which is kinder for my nan. We went about half way around the main outer-city line before we all realised we were hungry. We had passed the Atomium and had unquestionably decided we wanted to come back to see that, but as it was a Sunday, the service stopped at five, so we didn’t suppose it would be today; luckily, we bought a 24hr ticket, so we can catch it in the morning before they leave in the evening.
After stopping to have some crêpes for lunch, nan had decided she was tired, so we headed back to the hotel. After nan arguing profusely with us that we should still go out, me and mum decided to go to the Magritte museum. It was really cool to be able to see how his work and style changed throughout his career. I have to admit, I am not the biggest fan of Magritte as I do kind of feel like it is glorified poster prints, however, I have to respect that he was basically the original and also that for the time, it wasn’t as if his works were mass produced, just made to look like they were…well nowadays they are.
After the museum, we went back to keep nan company and of all things, we all ended up watching Toy Story 3 in their hotel room, pretty much from start to finish, which was very nice really, as neither of them had seen it before; I had…and still cried…twice. The evening ended with me and mum going out to Hard Rock café for dinner and a couple of cocktails. We talked a lot about our lives in the past and I learned sides of my mum I had never known, it was truly a lovely meal and such a nice chat with things I feel she had needed to say for a while. We ended up befriending our waitress, Lucie, and she has offered to help me out and invite me out with her and her boyfriend at some point to meet some new people; Brussels really is that kind of city. With mum and nan leaving tomorrow, I don’t know how I will feel knowing that they will be my last visitors until October when I have booked to go home for a weekend but I am sure I will find out.
