Door to the Mausoleum near Grove House

This lecture was of incredible interest and I found myself wanting to know more and more as our guest lecturer Gilly King took us on a walk around Campus showing us many different hidden nineteenth century aspects of Campus, many of them I was unware even existed. We were fortunate enough to be allowed into the Mausoleum near Grove House, the detailing and architecture was slightly spell bounding. The design and the great detailing was something that has made me want to potentially look further into the history behind the Mausoleum. Gilly gave us an insight into what why this Mausoleum was built, who built it, when it was built, and the links to the other graves which are housed in very close proximity to main Mausoleum.

Inside the Mausoleum near Grove House

Leaving this area of campus, I found myself wondering questions such as, why was this part of my campus? Why was so little about it known by students?

The Door through to the Ice House

Why was it important for us to understand and want to protect and preserve?

Moving around campus we went into the Ice-House which I was unaware that it was on campus. I was interested to learn that at university we house one of the only lasting colonies of a rare breed of cave spider, who I am sure were just as unhappy as I was about being in their home. However, the spiders aside, I was shocked by the depth of the ice-house as well as learning how it would have been filled and then utilized in the nineteenth century. I think this era might be of great interest and something I might be really interested in looking further into for my project.
