The Welcome Collection
The Welcome Collection is a museum that almost everyone can relate to in one way or another. Health effects everything one does no matter what that may be. Some of the exhibits at this museum were very interesting to see. For example, the teeth exhibit was interesting because I was able to see the dentist equipment evolve over the years. One model stuck out to me because I will see it a lot in my future career.
This is a model of a cleft palate prosthesis. Those with cleft palates often experience difficulties with their teeth and their speech. Most children receive surgery right away to correct this problem, but it may cause problems in the future. This is where I would work with children to help them learn or compensate for techniques to talk. On the description it stated that years ago people with cleft palates were misunderstood as having mental impairments. I find this sad because people are so quick to judge based on looks.
This is an adjustable iron chair created by George Wilson in 1871. This chair is advanced because it was able to shift into several positions and it folds up for easier transportation. This is interesting to me because my brother had disabilities and was in a wheelchair his whole life. It is amazing to see how far the technology has come with these devices. Wheelchairs can be a hassle when they are being transported because of their size, so the fact that this one can fold is revolutionary. I really enjoyed this museum because the medical topic is so interesting to me. I love learning new things and seeing the advancements in items that I may use every day. I also was able to relate back to things my brother used and to things I will be using in the future for my career.
