BLOG 1 Young People and Political Engagement

Lets talk about young people and politics,

                                           How politically engaged are you?

I used to spend many hours reading, researching and following political parties (I even learned all the silly words like constitution and mandate). I thought that by being actively engaged in political discussion, I could single-handedly save the world and everyone would bow down before me. I had somehow convinced myself that I knew everything. Basically politics turned me into a narcissistic monster and I managed to offend nearly everyone I know. It took many hard lessons and lots of tears to finally realise that I do not know it all and that others have interesting and important views as well.

So, I would like to take a second to apologize to all the people I offended during my time as a Facebook Politician, you will be happy to hear I am now a changed person.

Have you tried breaking the rules?

Politics as it stands at the moment just doesn’t seem to work, the current system has been designed to make us angry, its purpose is to divide us.

‘You support that party’ and ‘I support this party’

 and

‘you are stupid for voting for Brexit’

and

‘why the hell didn’t you vote? ’

Politics is just too stressful for me.

After the 2017 General Election there was what was being described as a ‘Youth Quake’ (2017), an unexpected surge in young voters hoping to get their voices heard.

I think its wonderful that young adults are wanting to help make a difference,

But are we really listening to what young people have to say?

I don’t think we are giving young people the encouragement they need to be confident adults.

we are encouraging them to vote, but is putting a cross in a box really going to make a change?

‘Brexit’ is not even a real word

But I have learned that everyone has the right to their own opinions and views, I would never tell anyone not to vote, you have to do what you feel is best for you. I can only talk about my own experience.

If I can help change my local community, and you can help change your local community and they can help change their local community

We are currently voting for something every year, yet nothing seems to change

Don’t think too big, that was my first mistake, ‘I am going to change the world’ was my mantra, and it was un-achievable, I am just one person how can I possibly change the world? What I can do is help change my local community. I can speak to my neighbours, I can get to know them. I can attend local events, I can volunteer, I can offer my assistance, I can smile at people as I pass them in the street, I can slowly but surely connect with my community and together we can lead a bottom up revolution to the system.

Vote with your Lifestyle

I think politics is so impersonal and dear I say it……. boring , you get to go to your local polling station once a year (currently) and put a black cross in a box for a party who doesn’t really do what you want them to do. I give the whole of the current political system a big black cross! The big red tick goes to community involvement.

Don’t grow up, be creative and really make a difference.  Make time to do what makes you happy, learn the guitar, train for the marathon, write a book whatever makes you happy do that, do that and have faith that you are travelling in the direction of your purpose. That is how we will change the world together

Don’t Grow UP :0)
