Deanna’s Post: Why study the Bible

It is important to study the Bible because it can tell us a lot about our history, and it brings us closer to Jesus. While as Christians out faith should lie in our relationship with Jesus, understanding and finding truth in the Bible can help bring us closer to Jesus and understand him in new ways. The Bible has changed a lot over the years, whether it be changes in wording, additional verses and stories, or even the deletion of books, stories, and verses. While this may rattle some who place their faith in the Bible rather than our Savior Jesus Christ, thinking critically and seeking the truth in the historical text can only grow a person’s faith if their faith lies in the right place.
Furthermore, seeking the truth in the bible ensures that it cannot be used improperly by organizations that may not have our best interests at heart, as like what happened with the Catholic church before English translations of the Bible were available, or like the slave Bible that was given to enslaved people in America.
Finally, studying the Bible brings a better understanding of Jesus’s teachings, and shows us how to be better Christians. As Christians, it is important to live how Jesus did and provide a good impression of Christians so we can bring as many people to the faith as possible.
