THE GOOD SAMARITAN BY JACOPO BASSANO

Synchronic Perspective:

The synchronic element of this painting lies in its portrayal of the central message of the parable, which is compassion and kindness to strangers, regardless of social, cultural, or religious backgrounds. The painting depicts the moment the good Samaritan struggles to put the wounded man onto his camel with a bandage on his right foot and a bottle of oil in his hand. His actions, from the bandage on his right foot to the oil bottle he used as his first aid, illustrate compassion. The bandage on his right foot symbolises his willingness to sacrifice his own comfort for the sake of the wounded man, while the oil bottle symbolises his preparedness to provide immediate care. The stark contrast between his actions and those of the priest and the Levite, who walk on the other side of the road, not showing sympathy to the suffering man, is a powerful moral lesson.

Diachronic Perspective:

The Bible does not mention dogs liking the blood of a wounded man. Therefore, one can interpret the painting based on its historical context. This historical context, particularly the relationship between the Jews and the Samaritans, is a crucial element that enriches our understanding of the painting and the parable it represents. The Jews and the Samaritans had a long-standing animosity, rooted in religious and cultural differences. The encounter with Jesus and the woman from Samaria (Luke 4:24-) confirms this historical conflict between these two nations. Additionally, the name should ring a bell if you were a Jew who was helped by somebody your nation considers to be an enemy. What will be your reflection in the future? It is so sad that Levite and the priest could see the suffering man and walk away.

What Critics say about the painting:

Many critics have positive comments on the painting for its emotive depiction of the parable of the Good Samaritan. The dramatic use of light to brighten the image engages the viewer and conveys the story’s message. This is demonstrated by how the injured and the man providing help are well highlighted.  The painting is also realistic in detail, so much so that everybody can easily understand and interpret the various characters. The spirit of helping people in need is well dramatised in the painting.

  1. Stephen, you focus on the smaller, more symbolic aspects of the painting is powerful. Its amazing how these small details can display such deep compassion. I also appreciate your focus on the historical tensions between Jews and Samaritans, as this difference is what makes this story so powerful.
