Communication theories often describe two ways by which meaning is conveyed and interpreted: either diachronically or synchronically.

  • A Synchronic understanding of communication places emphasis on continuity with conventional meaning. In this sense, the artist or author works within the general, common, inherited meanings of a word or image.
  • A Diachronic understanding of communication places emphasis on discontinuity with conventional meaning. It is here understood that words and images can mean different things to different people. In this sense, the artist or author is not limited to historical meanings or common associations, but has freedom to create meanings that are unique and new. The artist may even be inviting the interpreter to create her own meaning.

After our visit, your post for this week will present your findings on three (of the ten) paintings. In the post you should:
• Describe the synchronic elements of each piece.
• Describe the diachronic elements of each piece.
• Critically engage with your findings. What the positive and negative elements of the synchronic message? What are the positive and negative elements of the diachronic message?
