In today’s session we reviewed Gilly Salmon’s 5 stage model.

Stage 1  – Access and motivation

In this stage the people who are using the tool or programme must fist have the adequate access to the the tool and then they should be motivated in order to continue using the tool. Human intervention is important here to enable support from the E-moderator who’s role it is to welcome them, encourage them to take part and log in regularly.

Stage 2 – Online socialisation

This stage again refers to the need to be able to take part and know how to navigate around tool/programme. The users should also be able to respond to other users so that they feel a part of the learning process. The role of the E-moderator in this particular stage is to be the host where they ensure that the learners needs are satisfied.

Stage 3 – Information exchange

In this stage the learners are to work together. In terms of the tool, the links need to be tested to make sure that they are working. Learners need to be confident that they are confident with the layout . The E-moderator is to help them with this and to support them using feedback.

Stage 4 – Knowledge construction

In this stage the activities are a little more complex for the users to get the required knowledge from them. E-moderator should ensure that everyone is taking part but also their role is less at this stage.

Stage 5 – Development

In this final stage the users are to look back at what they have learned and have an assessment which will enable them to discover what they have gained from the experience but also to see how they develop their learning for future use.
