Editing

We decided to use Movie Maker as we both have had previous experience with this software and neither of us own a MAC so it was easier for us to be able to edit anywhere in the univeristy or at home.

Movie maker is a very simple editing software which made it easy for us to upload the clips we wanted and add certain things to it such as music and text. However with its simplicity came some difficulties as it didn’t have as many tools as we would of liked to make our video that little bit better, to clip the music became difficult. One of our problems was making the background music quiet enough to be able to hear the voice overs but also loud enough to be able to hear it in the backgrounds for some effect.

We found our music through a copyright website that was linked up to Movie Maker, we typed in slow jazz music and found a track that we thought would fit nicely into our video without being too overpowering.

Literature

After completing the interviews, we both started to look for literature that we could use that will help us back up our points.

Dorynei states that learning langauges is a series of diverse learning behaviours rather than a uniform process. Therefore motivation may affect different people as they may not want to pick up a langauge or want to succeed.

Oxford 1990 states that people who pick up another langauge will gain better techniques at memorising and visualising and with this will allow them to be able to develop through later life. Through previous data it is shown that it is easier for children to pick up new skills however it is never too late to learn something new.

There are many benefits such as:

  • Gain confidence
  • Improve your employment references- if companies are looking to expand over seas then you can  communicate with either parties.
  • Traveling- allows you to travel the world as you will not have any problems with translating especially if you learn a basic langauge such as French, Spanish or German.

Interviews

For our video essay we had decided from the beginning that our main focus would be about people’s different opinions on learning foreign languages. This meant that we had to find people to interview and ask them a range of questions which we could later use in our video as reference,  we asked each different person a different question from our list.

  1. Why do you think it is important to learn a language?
  2. What language do you know or have ever learnt?
  3. What benefits do you think there are with learning a foreign langauge for a future career?
  4. Are there any langauges you would like to learn and why?
  5. Are you an international student? If so, how do you find learning in a second langauge?

We soon realised that asking random students/lecturers was going to be a,otherwise harder than we imagined as most people made excuses as they did not want to be filmed. However we did find a few nice people that gave excellence answers and once again gave surprising responses. We found it a lot easier to ask people questions 1 and 2, however in some responses many people answered question 3 also. We had to make sure that we asked each person for their permission to film them and get them to sign a ethic consent former and we made sure that we would include their names on the final video. We had to include this format as it was a signature for them to give their permission to us for using their identity.

Planning our main topic

In the next lesson we discussed the different angles and shot types that you can include in a video, we decided together in a pair that we wanted to keep our video quite simple so we were going to stick to basic shots as we wanted the audience to focus on our information that we were giving.

“Why learn a foreign langauge?”

When asked this question it is very simple for myself to answer as I have only gained basic French skills in my school life, however when asking other people around us in our classroom setting we soon realised that many people had answers you would not expect.

We created our storyboard and tried to work out where we would place all of our ideas so that our video flowed and it was easy for the audience to follow and gain the right information. We decided that we wanted to figure out what langauges different people spoke and also if learning a langauge or picking up another was beneficial in anyway.

Planning our Video Essay

This was the first lesson that we first started concentrating on our video essay for this module. We looked at the type of information that we would have to include with/within our video essay. This lesson was the lesson where we first came up with our ideas of what our main topic may be about.

  • Formal and informal learning
  • Using technology within early childhood
  • Advantages of technology with disabled children
  • Foreign languages

The last point ‘foreign langauges’ became our main inspiration when thinking of our main topic. After many consideration and debates on what the title should be called we decided that it would be interesting to look at ‘why’ people should learn foreign languages. This is relatable in some way to my pair as one of us can speak fluently in Spanish,  if you look further down in the my blog you will have realised that we have also adopted this topic into another video.

Within this first lesson we had to create a 6 cell story board online which gave us an insight into how to create one for our video essay. We created it on Storyboard that.com

In this lesson we also learnt about different lighting techniques, one thing that stood out to us was that natural lighting is always better which we wanted to keep in mind for the shooting of our video essay.

Learning Spanish

We decided to create this short video to help children learn the numbers 1-10 in Spanish. We came up with this idea because one of our group members is fluent in Spanish and we believed it would be something that other people would want to learn. The concept was to make it short and simple but also very effective as it was aimed at children, with this in mind we decided to add child-like music and clear writing. We had seen a similar video where a man had written foreign words on pieces of paper to teach children and so we took this idea and adapted it to our topic.
