A former student was interested in
School ethos: how it supports school policy making and reflects the values and priorities of a setting through extra-curricular activities.

(adapted student exemplar)
Schools whose ethos highlights inclusivity, personal growth, and social awareness will often foster a sense of shared responsibility between pupils and staff to uphold the goals of their respective ethos’s … such schools are also more likely to have a clear behaviour policy that is understood by staff and pupils, celebrate positive behaviour consistently, and are less likely to exclude their pupils (Ann Hatton, 2012).

As a school, the primary school provides instrument lessons for every pupil in their school… the headteacher expressed that she believed that every child had a right to learn an instrument regardless of economic status. In order to get funding for these lessons, the school holds an annual fundraiser… a clear example of one of their values, ‘no-one left out’. When practiced, this value promotes equal opportunities for all, which can work towards breaking the socioeconomic barrier that is faced by many parents who do their best to access educational opportunities for their children
