The Tate Modern was in my opinion the best way to end this course. After experiencing so much of Londons early history it felt like all of it was building up to modern day so it was really great to have a timeline of art in the past three weeks.
The gallery itself was a bit confusing to navigate at times, but getting lost more than once actually led me to stumble on some really great pieces of artwork. I ended up walking in to the room filled with neon art which I thought was some of the most interesting things I had seen in a gallery here. The image included below was one of the pieces I really liked. When I first looked at it I really didn’t understand what was artistic about it. At second look though you realize that the letters have been switched in the words and it became almost a comedic work of art. After reading a bit about the artist I found that his goal was to make people not see how his work was artistic until they had looked at it in more depth and realized what it was. I think this says a lot about modern art and the idea that all art can really be whatever you want it to be. I hadn’t found myself really thinking deeply about the art here until I saw this work and felt like I understood modern art a lot better than the classic works we had seen previously.
I would say that the Tate Modern was easily my favorite trip. I feel like I was able to really connect better with the art here than I had been on other trips and I think it also really tied together a lot of how the culture here started and how it got to become what it is now.
