Week 7: March 9th

The university is still in a strike, leaving many of us without lecturers or foreseeable classes. I took the week to discuss ideas with my classmates, recuperate, and stay thankful for the few tasks at hand in-between rehearsals. Rehearsals continued to build upon the movement-based performances, the two constant groups showcasing their concepts and structures to each other. We (the Act III group) developed a basic plot – focusing primarily on the give and take of each earthly element presented in the play and exploring their depth. Ghosts uses the elements to exemplify the destruction of greed and class-bound society, as well as the undeniable torture of past trauma and mistakes haunting anyone’s future and present. An example of this would be the orphanage burning down and the character’s plan to replace it with a brothel – fire and light are the destructors, wreaking havoc on the passed principals of the anti-heroes. With this in mind, we also constructed a quick set, using materials from the set space, planning to incorporate water, a soothing element, into the final piece.
