Week Three: February 10th

Technical introduction and light/colour theory. Using the application taught in the technical workshop, discussions of applying aesthetic and focal points to the production moved to the front of our idea compilations. We examined how certain lighting techniques can affect an entire scene, the characters in it, and – above all – how the audience perceives the events onstage. Certain angles, tones, and shapes can determine exactly how the production feels – from warm spotlights to blue gels, everything can play a role in the overall event. To demonstrate this, we were put into groups and given the chance to form scenes around different lighting setups. My favourite ended up being the ground spotlight; it had a golden hue, a wide angle, and a blinding intensity. It felt classic, focused, and endless. For most of the groups, everyone imitated certain classical notes of theatre, drawing nostalgia and fondness from those watching. Using this session improved my outlook on lighting and it’s possibilities.
