During the first week of Clinical Simulation day, we had a recap of the skill; Catheterisation and inserting NGT feeding tube. This was use because it gives us opportunity to perfect our skills in inserting a catheter and a NGT with caution and going more in depth into why it is important on how sterilised the area and the procedure has to be.
A catheter is a tube that is put into our bladder via the urethra ( the tube that carries urine out of your body), while the procedure is called Catheterisation. While I was catheterising there was an issue where i realised the importance of appropriate catheterisation. Firstly, hand hygiene is very essential as it is hand-to-hand transmission is a major factor in the spread of infection among patients. It is very important to check the expiration date, if it is prominent because it can reflect that time span during which the product is expected to remain stable,i.e., when preserved according to its designated operation condition, it maintains it power, coincidence and unity and also, checking for the right type of catheter for both female and male to maintain adequate drainage. It is a very sterilised procedure this is because when bacteria-contaminated catheter is inserted into the ushers, a catheter-associated urinary tract infection ( CAUTI) may occur. This usually happens when the person with pure hygiene. Before inserting anything or even touching the interior of the patient it best to clean the area around the genitals. Makes that there is lubrication is needs to numb the area so it is less painful when inserting the catheter, also make sure that we insert it into the correct place which is the urethra and not the veins for females.also when taking out the catheter make sure you are are also using clean gloves to pull out the catheter and warn the patient and explain to them what you will be doing before and after the procedure. While doing this procedure I did feel very nervous but yet calm as i knew i need a little more practice.
The next procedure that we did was to insert an NGT in a child we didn’t have a child model, so we had to do it on an adult model. NGT is a tube that is inserted through your nasal used for nutrient, administration of drugs, or complex needs such as difficulties swallowing, neurone disease and Parkinson’s disease or even head injury. Through the procedure you should be constantly asking the patient if they are okay, as it can very uncomfortable when inserting the tube in through their nostrils. I made sure that i explained. Every thing to them as what i will be doing and what this procedure is for and it may feel when i am inserting. I had watched as the tubing traveled through my plastic patient’s nostril, through the pharynx, into the esophagus, and finally, into the stomach. The most important part, my instructors had emphasized, was to get the feel for the procedure. The amount of smoothness I felt with the mannequin was carefully designed to match what I would feel in a real patient.
