Year 1

My year 1 placement experiences:

My placement has been amazing, once I started working with my assessor I felt much more relaxed. My assessor challenges me and gives me knowledge long with confidence when administrating patient care confidently under her supervision. My first day of administrating injection in the subcutaneous area long with knowing how to administrate with the different types of patients whether obese or skinny. A skinny patient is different one needs to angle the needle at a 45 degrees angle to make sure that the injection goes into the fatty area for greater results. My assessor tests me on the drug that I am administrating for example what is the drug use and the amount I am working out. I am learning so much, I am extremely excited to be at St Georges Hospital for my first ever in a hospital placement.

Midway through placement:

Week four into placement, I am feeling more confident and eager to learn, from the first time I administrate subcutaneous injection into the fatty area of the body. Following my assessor and learning how to administrate different injections, is simply beautiful. first placement for six weeks in St Georges Hospital leaves me wanting more.

Working with the sisters:

I found working at St George Hospital a beneficial placement. I worked hard and learned so much, I am very happy to leave this place with so much knowledge, everyone worked as if I was already part of the team. This was one of my highlights of working in St George Hospital. On my last day I received a massive compliment from the ward manager. He said that he really believes that I will become a great nurse and he would welcome me back into Amyand ward once I am trained. here that from the ward manager on my first ever placement, for me is a big accomplishment. I also remember him asking me to do an ECG for one of his patients. at level 1 also another big accomplishment. well done to me.

Last day on Amyand ward:

My last day when very fast, my practice assessor was amazing at her work and also whilst working with me. She never showed me any bad vibes and she seems to enjoy her job, but not be in charge. She found this stressful while mentoring a young nurse. She even made sure that our Rota was made together so I benefit from her. She encourages me to learn and test my knowledge at various times. Overall having a passionate assessor makes the world of difference on my first placement. I am very happy about my first placement. I could recommend St Georges to anyone.

My first mental health placement:

My insight placement was also memorable, and I also learned a lot from watching how the nurses and Healthcare assistants work. My insight was on an eating disorder ward for young adults. I learned that it is important to follow the rules and protocol of the NMC as something can always go wrong. If the rules are followed at all times, fewer mistakes will happen. During my 2 weeks, many children’s had to be restrained, and this upset me greatly. Although I know it is in their best interest, it is still inhuman. After seeing this a few times and seeing how hard the patient will fight not to be restrained, this can damage both nurse and patient’s mental health. I realize it is also good to have a deep understanding of restraints and why it is used. Over this placement was not too long but offered me a deep look into a mental health hospital.

Second placement year 1:

less than a week to go, very excited about starting on the 22nd Feb in Merton Medical Centre and 8:30 am. super excited and nervous. I just need to send an email to Catherine about my epad to make sure I am fully ready for Monday morning. BRING IT ON!!!!!!

First day in primary care:

My first day at Merton Medial centre was good. We started the day with an introduction from the Advance Nurse Practitioner/senior, quite detailed. We were also introduced briefly to the staff and was shown around the practices. We were shown where to enter and exit and was given codes, and this made me feel like part of the team. Having a good start to any placement is crucial for the student, being able to ask any member of staff a question is vital for the student nurses training. Merton Medical Centre definitely delivered that today. I was with an HCA named Dorota, I watched her doing some telephone consultation and liaising information to the patients. I was calling patients into her consultation rooms and watching giving young children, teenagers, adults and the elderly the flu or the covid vaccine. I also took to see how blood is taken from the veins. On my first day, I got to show what I have learnt in St George, by drawing up a B12 solution twice for the patient. The second was better, the more I practise this skill the better I will become once I am qualified. I finished the rest of the day signing off my first-day interview, also listening on the telephone and learning how to book patients into the system.
