  1. Hi Poppy,

Wow! I loved watching your vlog- it really kept me engaged throughout the whole vlog, thank you! I loved how you related your vlog to our students’ experience, it is really unfair that on-campus students who were living at home had to pay for their accommodation during the lockdown, the government should have refunded us!

Observing the actions taken by the students from The University of Manchester, it really shows that they care about their education, well-being despite the lockdown occurring. Do you think that these actions were listened by their University?

I also enjoyed the way that you gave your top tips on how to be politically engaged, I really hope that young people like us will take up on your tips and start to be more fascinated about politics!

  2. Hi Lalene,

Thank you for your lovely comment, it’s appreciated :). Yes, the accommodation issue has been very stressful for lots of students, especially those living on campus. I think Manchester University could have done more to support the students, especially with providing mental health support. It was sad to see on the full video from Vice, (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yM52_QPZ2WM&t=383s) that a student living in halls at the University took their own life and was suffering from mental health issues.

I think if they couldn’t afford to refund the students any more than 30%, they should have provided mental health support and at the very least communicated properly with students about the fences that were put up around the accommodation. I would have found that situation extremely stressful and isolating and I would argue the students in this university were failed. Students are ultimately customers of the university and should have been treated much better in the circumstances.

I do, however, think the government could have helped universities with some of the costs, whether it be for refunds or mental health support as the government allowed these students to return to university and live-in accommodation only to be locked in and treated poorly with no in-person lectures to attend!

What are your thoughts? Do you think it is the governments’ responsibility to step in and refund students or do you think it is the universities responsibility to refund? I would love to hear what you think about this 🙂
