Reflection on Year 2 practice stimulated placement

I was allocated to go to Jungle ward, I was given the opportunity to have an outreach onto Jungle ward, which is day-case ward that focuses on paediatric from different ages that are preparing for a surgical procedure, IV fluids/ medications, bloods tests, blood transfusions and even injections. So, I was working alongside Leanne, I was taught on how to complete and undertake a pre-operative checklist, knowing the questions to ask parents and the importance of documenting safeguarding concerns. As the shift went on, I closely observed Leanne draw up and administer Gentamicin on an infusion pump for 30 minutes to a young paediatric patient. I calculated the dosage required following the 6R route of medication and the desires dosage medication. Before she drew up the medication we double checked the dosage prescribed was the right amount following the BFC guidelines and protocol. At first, it was quite difficult for me as I cannot yet draw up or administer Iv infusions however, having the opportunity to closely monitor and help calculate dosage was very helpful. It has increased my confidence in solving IV drug calculations. Therefore, this day has been extremely beneficial for me, it has shown me a different side and field in nursing.
