Week 5
Poem Scene:
Introduction:
The goal of this task was to write a scene using the characters developed in a previous task and then write the scene again with only the dialogue.
Here is my initial work.
Fade In
Ext. – Cafe – Morning
It’s cloudy, cold and about to rain. Arthur is sitting outside a small English cafe on a typical London street. He is wearing a long black coat closed at the front. An unfinished cup of tea sits on the table in front of him.
The first drops of rain begin to fall.
From nowhere James plunks himself down opposite Arthur.
James
[Cheerful]
‘Lo, Art’s.
What’s gotten you so down.
Arthur roles his eyes and rubs his forehead. He isn’t ready to deal with James this early in the day.
Fade Out.
Edit: 16/11.
Notes:
Arthur and Jack discuss what Jack is planning to do. Jack is planning to go knocking on doors for the local Labour party to drum up support for an upcoming local election. Arthur is tired, he has spent the last few weeks working very hard for the upcoming term, he teaches, part time A-level (undetermined subject). He has also had to complete an article for a commission recently that required a lot of work. Arthur begs off of helping Jack since he is just too tired. (Potential family crisis).
Jack eventually runs off. Arthur just sits watching the people for a while. It starts to rain. Arthur sees a young girl in rags opposite/ nearby taking cover near a building across the road.
This is the full script.

And here is just the dialogue.

Conclusion:
This was an intriguing exercise. Reading just the dialogue shows just how much can be misinterpreted and hidden subtext intentional and unintentional. I believe I will remember this and use it when writing future scripts to check that the dialogue properly reflects what I want to say.
