Week 3

Character Portrait:

Introduction:

The goal of this task was to create a character portrait that can be used to identify and develop characters for an upcoming piece of work. Here I decided instead of my usual list to attempt a poem.  The idea was to use the setting and tone of the poem to inform the story.

Character Portrait:

Leaves. Autumn’s rain,

Yellow, green and brown.

Trees. Branches strain,

Summer’s winding down.

Whirling winds weather,

Steaming streets on frozen air.

Light clouds flying faster,

Dark ones hang and stare.

Worlds tears begin to fall,

Streets begin to cool.

Animals may hide,

Man merely stands aside.

Winter chills abound,

Snow’s expected.

Rain’s rejected.

Autumn is around.

Thoughts on the poem:

Heavy focus on the environment. The setting is clearly some time in Autumn. Feels slightly melancholy, perhaps a piece of characterisation.

Needs and desires.

Character needs warmer clothing, a coat maybe. Character wants to be warm and dry. It’s raining/ rained.

The Story:

No longer is the character a student in ‘Social Media Ghost’, the character is now the detective that is trying to find the killer.

Conclusion:

After much thought, I decided not to connect the horror story to the character portrait here and to instead use this as an opportunity to create new characters with their own unique narrative. Overall I feel this poem is a successful character portrait though not in the traditional sense. Obviously. The reason I feel this was successful is that it helped me create three original characters.
