Week 6 (Worked Examples in E-learning)

E-learning methodologies A guide for designing and developing e-learning courses

This week’s reading was a really big guide for designing and developing e-leaning courses. I focused on cheaper two ‘What is needed to develop an e-learning course?’. First it talks about the design of your e-course and added a model ‘Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation’ (p:26) as a team each individual involved would have a part to play in the process, for my project I will be working independently so from my understanding the book was a little bias to a ‘one man show’ this was clearly designed for origination and is a guide that goes into depth for big projects but where does that leave ‘the little man’. Overall the information is helpful when applying it to fit my individual needs however parts can be added to make it more accessible for people with no teams. Hey expressed the importance of technology is when it comes to the process of e-learning.

Week 5 (Principles of multimedia learning)

12 Principles of Multimedia Learning

This weeks reading was of Mayers 12 principals of multimedia. It decibels what it will take to make a successful multi-media element. Such as one advice was words and pictures is better than words alone. They even look at what does not work to engage people learning such as speaking images on the presentation. These principles incorporate the cognitive loud theory, what Mayer could have been trying to argue is that we have limited capacity in our working memory so it is important that the information we set do not overpower our mind and create confusion such as Image Principle 10. Personalization Principle – People learn better from multimedia lessons when words are in conversational style rather than formal style (P:1). This is also one of the things he encouraged however when teachers and lectures use PowerPoint to teach it can be repeated from time to time so what should be considered when teachers have to teach is to personalise their work (Bartsch & Cobern 2003). Reading off the slides that not stimulate the brain however just make it slower to process at we already see it on scream yet it is being read again out loud. Mayer’s principles should really be taken into consideration when presenting a multimedia platform as it can really help the learners to grasp all elements of the tools presented.

Week 4 (Cognitive load theory and Instructional design)

Cognitive load theory and instructional design: Recent developments. Educational psychologist

This article begins with describing how the Cognitive loud came about, a little background and history. It then described that the working memory can only hold limited information at a time, long term memory is the next step which allows us to process the information we gain further and with that we then develop schema. “As used by Piaget the term “schema” refers to a dynamic, self-producing system that is differentiated in functioning; its constitution over time is an aspect of the functioning of the embodied nervous system” (p:402). The article described that the first moments of the activity is critical because the brain can make a decision to keep or not keep that information. They even described that languages is difficult to adjust our long term memory to connect with the new information so the working memory has to work extra hard. This is what encouraged me to do my activity using a video ,  videos may work effect because we process the pictures that we are seeing and listening to what is going on and this gives the working memory encouragement for it to than become long term memory. Having a clear message in the video and debating about it after can help the process of the working memory to help capture what information was just gained. Holton (2009), suggest that cognitive load need to clarification especially the mental status of the working memory.

Week 3 Learning from e-courses? (Planning)

E-learning and the science of instruction: proven guidelines for consumers and designers of multimedia learning (Chapter 2)

The chapter in this book focused on ‘how do people learn from e-courses’. They discuss the importance of multi-media principles expressing that words are pictures works with the sensory of the ears and eyes and becomes working memory. While in this process the sounds and images turns into a verbal model and pictorial model and is combined to be prior knowledge in our long term memory (p.35). This gives a clear outline of how beneficial the multi-media principles are because without this the brain can have a difficult time producing the working memory information into long term memory. This was described as one of the affects it has to learning, research was described to be key for a good e-learning progression. Wang and Shen (2012) strongly agree with this theory as they described that it shapes practice for online learning and development. What the chapter lacked in was adding elements of social learning to e-courses, they strictly focused on the cognitive approach which can limit their understanding. They could have considered a wider range of researchers which looks at learning is in broader sense.

Week 1 (What is Elearning?)

E-learning: emerging uses, empirical results and future directions

In this article they discuss that e-learning is moving faster than what everyone expected. They expressed that most business are now using e-learning to provide training for staff and it is proven to be effective, accessible and allows a lot of time. They suggests also that it is a great effective learning tool says employees and researchers. However the success of the program simply lays in the design and IT infrastructure, so if it’s too complicated and not complex than viewers will find it hard to follow and learn. The main focus of the paper was it looking at reviewing the movement of e-learning and they concluded that its gone to many organisations not just school, literally everywhere. I agree with some aspects of the review because my employers have their working keeping up with training and policy using e-learning. Rosenberg (2001) agrees with the e-leaning movement and adds that communication is valuable to gaining incite of which tools are out there.

Just A Bit About Me!

e-learning

I selected E learning as one of my modules because i believe that E learning has a massive impact in how we teach individuals in modern day society. It’s continuously revolving and i wanted more knowledge and understanding in order to teach children effectively as possible using advanced technology tools.

However the main reason i want to be a teacher is to change our education sector because of my experience when i was in school. This video link goes into depth about my anger with the education board, and it was used with very powerful multimedia tools, i first came across it on Facebook which is one of the most top ranged social media sites.
