Today we had a guided marking session for the case study this enabled us to who what needs to be in the assignment and what information is not relevant to be able to get higher marks. Following this I was able to remove the irrelevant information I had added to my assignment.

Today we had a guest lecturer who this is a sexual health specialist we discuss sexual health and different types of STIs and STDs; how these can be transmitted and who is at risk. This gave me a better insight on the topic of sexual health and clarified some of the sigmas around sexual health.

Today we looked wound care and different types of wounds. When dressing wounds you have use ANTT  aseptic non touch technique ensuring you do not introduce any infection to the wound. This session will enable me to complete wound care identifying different types of wound, completing a wound assesment and the types of dressings that can be used.

Complex care and homelessness

Today we we looked at patients with complex care and multiple health needs. We discussed our own experiences with complex patients and how they differ in different settings. We looked at homelessness and the impact on an individuals life.

Today we looked at living with long term conditions, the cost of the condition and the impact on life. This is important when it comes to health promotion as come of these conditions can can be prevented with education and lifestyle change. We also discussed end of life and our past experiences.

In the afternoon we identified and discussed different assessment tools we can use for patients. We went through 2 scenarios and applied the relevant assessments.

Today we looked at smoking and alcohol in relation to health promotion; how smoking affects the body and why people smoke. We looked at the safe alcohol intake levels and what is classed as excess drinking and how we can educate patients on these topic as Every contact counts.

We then went onto child safeguarding and looked at case studies on failings for child abuse. As health professionals we can come across children and we need to know the signs and red flags for potential abuse and neglect.

In the afternoon we worked in groups and discussed the types of care we deliver in our work places and how they differ from one setting to the next. This gave us an insight of how care differs.

Self directed learning

Assessing services users who are pregnant

During self directed learning I looked at the topic of services users who are pregnant this focused on the pregnant woman and the care she receives throughout her pregnancy by different services such as the midwife and GP. Antenatal Screenings are completed on the fetus to find any conditions that may be present. Health promotion is provided for the mother throughout pregnancy such as antenatal education, smoking cessation and nutritional advice. Woman have scheduled appointments throughout the pregnancy as a schedule of care.  Pregnant women use a different NEWS chart and this is called MEWS (Maternal Early Warning Systems) when taking observations. These slides have given me an insight into how pregnant woman are cared for.

Today we completed the group presentations on the research we completed for our chosen borough which was Sutton. The research on Sutton gave me a better insight into the demographics and how they differ to neighbouring areas.

In the afternoon we looked at health promotion for older people this is something I am used to dealing with daily at work so I was able to contribute so session.

These topics will helps me to complete my assignment due for the current topics.
