Week Three

11 January 2018

I arrived at the children centre at 9:25 AM for play and stay session which will be split into two morning and afternoon sessions.

I questioned the fact that the toilets were kept locked because how can children become self-care and independent if they are not allowed to go to the toilet when they need to as this is a barrier to developing this. I question this with the manager and used an example of a child going to get a drink from his bag without being asked to do so as an example of Self-Care and independence. And she said that nobody had ever mentioned this before and thought this was a good example and should have been something that somebody else should have brought to her previously.

Reflective practice

Whilst working at the children centre today I have seen some strategies that I used for helping to keep distractions to a minimum. For example, children equipment/ toys are covered in white to ease distractions in children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) This enabled the children to remain focused on the tasks in hand and these strategies are strategies that I can use in the future when I am working with other children.

Hello world!

3/12/17
Today I met with the student placement manager. Who showed me around the centre and introduced me to the relevant staff that I will be working with on regular basis during my 8 weeks placement. She told me most of the relevant information that I needed to know about the Centre.
The Children’s Centre is a specialist setting supporting all families in Wandsworth with children aged 0 to 5 years with disability, special needs or complex medical needs.
During my meeting with the manager, I observed a stay and Play session, which involves parents and children working alongside an early years practitioner and a play therapist “what a great collaboration” I feel privileged and am looking forward to working with such a great team.
