During the second half of Year 2 placement, I had the opportunity to work in a special needs school. I was working alongside the school nurses to deliver care in a school setting. My time at that school was enriching. I had the opportunity to care for a student who has a chronic condition, which consists of Cerebral palsy, which is the name for a group of lifelong conditions that affect movement and coordination. It’s caused by a problem with the brain that develops before, during or soon after birth. Gastro-Oesophageal reflux, also referred to as (GORD), is a common condition where stomach acid leaks into the oesophagus (gullet). Also, Chronic lung disease refers to a group of diseases that cause airflow blockage and breathing-related problems.
I was placed in Hoarsely’s class for the morning to observe and assist the students. The students that were in hoarsely class had severe learning disabilities and severe chronic conditions. The students were swimming in the school facilities’ hydrotherapy pool that morning. I escorted one of the students from the class to the hydrotherapy pool, remembering to carry the suctioning cylinder. We got to the changing room, and I assisted one of the teaching support assistants (TSA)to hoist the student onto the changing bed with the ceiling hoist. The TSA advised me to use folded towels to support and elevate the student’s head. The permanent position of the head can cause a blockage to the airways if it is not positioned correctly.
Furthermore, the student was prone to producing excessive amounts of secretion. So, I had to be very vigilant when caring for the student. I did my A-E assessment before putting the swimming suit on. We then hoisted the student off the bed, checking the position of the student’s head and if they were correctly in the sling. I did notice some secretion in the student’s mouth. I got the suctioning cylinder and began to suction the excess secretion. Once it was all clear, the student was hoisted into the swimming pool.
Once the student had finished their swimming lesson, I assisted in putting the sling on the student. Once the sling was in place, I hoisted the student to the changing bed and immediately elevated the head. I got the suction cylinder to suction any excessive secretion in the mouth. Once the student was back in uniform, I transferred her into her wheelchair and escorted her back to class.
Honestly, this was a gratifying experience for me. I saw how excited the students were to be in the swimming pool. The fire of joy in their eyes as they floated in the water softened my heart. I enjoyed spending time with them and will definitely do it again.
