I was assigned a group of patients in A&E to oversee and care for while I worked my shift. However, my reflection entails one patient I was looking after. My patient was severely deteriorating as he had hyponatremia (low sodium) that was caused by the intake of too much water, he had a Glasgow Coma Scale of 6 therefore, he needed immediate medical attention. However, he was not appointed a bed, but he was in the rapid assessment seating area which was not suitable for him at the time as his relative was struggling to keep him awake and alert. I had informed the nurse in charge and the doctor currently looking after him. He was quickly assessed and treated soon after and onto a bed. I reacted with urgency as it was a medical emergency. From this experience, I learned how to prioritise patient needs, I also learned to effectively give a handover. This relates to the NMC code prioritise people as put the interest of my patient first.
