Title of learning activity: Complex care

Diary of Learning activity :

Today’s class was a bit different compared to the other’s, The session covered Scott & Paulette modules. The session happened via Teams rather than face to face. I thought was nice to receive a lecture from teams in proximity of Christmas holiday. The session started in time, Colin joined us at the beginning to wish us all Happy Christmas and reminded us that all the next sessions in January we will need to wear our uniforms. The topic of the day was looking at complex care and vulnerable group, keeping person centred care and shared decision making at the centre of the conversation. We looked into the understanding of complex care in different health settings and how the role of NA work within integrated care. We discussed the definition of home and the various definitions of vulnerability. I thought was very good that everyone had cameras on, and we all contributed sharing thoughts and experiences. It was sad to end the session because was the last class with Scott and Paulette and we all really enjoyed their time with us. At the end of the session, we also received the email announcing where the next placement will be. I will be based at the Royal Neuro Hospital. I am very looking forward to it because it will be a change of scenery for me.

Diary of Learning activity:

Today’s class started in time and due to the proximity to Christmas not all the cohort colleagues were there. The lecturer for the day was Paulette, even though the mood in general in class was slightly low she managed to run a very interesting and interactive lecture. The topic for the morning session was about promoting health for older people and the importance of physical activity. We discussed about the importance of aging and what can impact physical and mental health of individuals.  We all contributed sharing our experiences in our roles and was very pleasant because it is always interesting to get to know different point of view. The lesson stressed the importance of the activities that the community offers for the elderly. Via a group exercise we identified the challenges that elderly face on the day to day living and we worked together to identify how as nursing associates we can support. After Lunch we discussed how important physical activities are for the individuals in this age group and throughout the lifespan in general. Movement is key to keep the organism active and preserve it for longer. We also started to look at what the topic of next session will be. We identified who are the vulnerable group in life and started to touch base on the topic. It was very interesting especially because of Paulette’s experience on the field. So was very interesting to understand deeper about different vulnerable groups. The class overall was very good.

Title of learning activity: Health and wellbeing – Long term conditions

Diary of Learning activity:

During today’s session we spent time with Paulette in the morning and with Colin in the afternoon. The session with Paulette was about sexual health. The session was run by an external lecturer, Kim, she’s a sexual health nurse in Brighton. The session was very interesting because gave us the opportunity to share our experience. I though was a very good session that stressed the importance of sexual screening and gave us a deeper understanding of the issue related to sexual health within the community. The afternoon session we spent time with Colin. Was nice to spend time with him because as always was very supportive and offered his help for our assignment. The topic discussed with him was part of Scott’s module. Using different example, we discussed how living with long term conditions can be challenging. Overall was another great day spent in a good learning environment and I enjoy sharing experiences with my colleagues.

Title of learning activity: Health and Well-being

Diary of Learning activity

Today’s class was focusing on the module Health and well being across the lifespan. We started the day in time at 09:30 AM. The topic of the morning session was mental health and mental illness. We met Paulette for the first time after placement, however the lecture was led by Hannah Cadogan, a palliative care nurse that came to share her personal experience about mental health. The lecture stressed the importance of the difference between mental health and illness. Throughout the class we all contributed sharing our experiences and via group exercises we explored the topic. I thought Hannah intervention was very valuable as she experienced herself mental illness and I though was very brave from her to share and explain how to seek for help and support. After the lunch break we still continued with the same module, but in this case we spent time with Colin. We started the session catching up , we talked about our placements and where we are at with our assignments. This time was very valuable, because Colin offered support to everyone regarding the exams. After catching up we discussed about campaign against smoking and drinking. We all contributed well on this topic and I thought was a great session because we all were able to give some insight on the topic.

Today’s class took place in a different room compared to the norm. Few of the cohort colleagues were missing and it was only 10 of us. We meet Scott at 09:30 AM. We started the class sharing feelings about our second clinical placement and felt like everybody’s placement went well. Moving on we discussed with Scott any possible concerns regarding the assignment. The topic for the day was Communication in nursing. We explored different types of communication skills that as nursing associates we are required to develop. It was a nice class because reinforced the concept of communication that we explored in Maria’s module few months ago. After lunch break the new topic was about caring for people with mental health conditions. I thought was a very interesting topic especially because I come from a different background of nursing. I feel I have learnt all new knowledge towards Mental health patients and the specific care we can offer to them. Overall, I had a very good day and it is always a pleasure to learn from my colleagues experiences.

Title of learning activity: Person centred care and shared decision making

Diary of Learning activity:

Today’s class was the last session before starting our second clinical placement. We spent the all day with the lecturer Scott and we focused on the module Delivery of safe and effective care. The topic of the morning session was on clinical judgment and shared decision making. I thought it was a great session were we gained knowledge on how to use effectively our clinical judgment and implement this with the nursing process. It is always very good the fact that the class participates to the proposed activities sharing experiences learnt from their practices. This makes the learning process more interactive and it is very helpful to listen to different experiences. In this session Scott also explained the importance of shared decision making and stressed how vital it is to include patients on their care plan. After the lunch break we discussed the importance of Evaluating care. It has been a less interactive session this time, the topic required more theory and we all were involved in the class intervening and sharing experiences within the class. I thought was a great learning day and gave us more knowledge and structure to practice during our second clinical placement.

Title of learning activity: Delivery of safe effective person-centred care

Diary of Learning activity

For this session we spent all day with Scott. Class started in time, and we started the day discussing about the assignment and about questions that we had regarding that. Once clarified all the points, Scott started his session that was based on planning and monitoring care. We deeply discussed about the nursing process and the Roper Logan Tierney Model in practice. It was good because we all contributed to the class and shared our experiences. After the lunch break, we were asked to split in three groups, and we completed an activity in group. The activity consisted in identify on a case study the RLT and create a care plan for the patient and find evidence of what we were talking about in references. I thought was amazing to complete this activity because it gave us a good idea on what the assignment needs to look like, moreover we had to discuss the findings in front of the class which is a great exercise to improve communication skills.
