Diary of Learning activity

Today’ session started smoothly and we changed location. The day is dedicated to the anatomy module and we started the lesson talking about the respiratory system. Angela our tutor went through it very in detail and asked us our knowledge and experiences. It has been great for me to learn other people experiences on head and neck and I also sometimes work oin head and neck wards , so I thought this first part of the morning was beneficial in order for me to apply the knowledge learnt into practice when I work in head and neck wards. I think is great that the classes are interactive because that enable us to learn more about the topic. After the tea break , we did a nice group activities related to the respiratory system. We started the afternoon session and changed topic, we started to talk about circulatory system and the structure of the blood. I think that the best part of this classes is the fact that Angela implements clinical examples and connects the theory to practice. After the lunch Break we spoke about the cardiovascular system and seen in the specific how the heart works and how every body system is connected to one another. I am really enjoying this learning sessions and it is very good to see how everybody participate actively in the class and shares their own experiences.

Learning Log Day 5

Title of learning activity: Reflection on the week

 

Diary of Learning activity

At the beginning of our last day we met Colin and we ordered our name badges and we ordered the uniforms that we will be using during simulation classes and during our placement. After successfully ordering uniforms, we moved to the clinical training area , where we were explained the importance of respiration counting and saturations. We were asked to split in pair and we performed the count of respiration and sats and appropriately introduced ourselves as professionals and correctly recorded the observations in the chart. I thought that was a great experience and practicing it and understanding the reason why this process it’s so important has given me a new confidence and I will definitely apply this lesson in practice. After the tea break we discussed about SWOT analysis and SMART objectives, I had already experienced both of them in the past when I used to work in the hospitality industry, however was very good to understand how to adapt the two of them in the health care settings. Today we had Emma as a guest in the class, she is a GP , that will take part on some of our classes and she was here to give us advice. I believe it’s a very good opportunity to be able to get advice from a more senior professional in the health care settings. After lunch break we reflected about the week and most of my classmates stated that they found difficult Wednesday class, however I do not think was difficult, but I believe we have to adapt ourselves to different teaching methods. Further more we had to expose our VARK questionnaire results for the class, and that showed us how learning ways can be totally different between an individual and the other.  I am going back to work on Monday and I am going to work with a new confidence and already with a different mind set, because I will be able to apply my learnings to practice. I am really looking forward to the future teachings.

Title of learning activity: Developing Professional and academic skill

During the fourth day we met our new teacher , Maria, she is the lead for the module Developing professional and academic skills. I thought she is very charming and engaging, she explained in detail the module and what she will be expecting from us during the course .Moreover, she showed us the list of books that we will need to read and made us choice which one was fitting best for us. After a little break , we went back to class and we reviewed the structure of the assignment and Maria explained step by step how to successfully complete the task. I thought was great to understand how to complete the task especially because in my case , in Italy during university I never had the opportunity to write an essay. Even though I felt was a great idea to get it explained, I have noticed that some of my classmates have started to feel the pressure. I am, very happy overall because I feel like I am getting in the loop of the university life. After lunch we talked about how to look after ourselves in order to be able to help others(patients , colleagues).Moreover we watched a Ted x video about mental wellness and we addressed different types of issues that can occur in life. I felt was very interesting and useful to recognise different behaviours that people may have. The day concluded meeting Rosanna  the student wellbeing officer for the university,  that talked us about the services available for student wellbeing and she gave great advise on extra courses that we can possibly implement in our course. I am very proud of the week so far and once again I had a constructive day and cannot find any faults.

Title of learning activity: Class 1 – Understanding health and illness across the life span

 

Diary of Learning activity

The third day started with everyone being on time and we all met our Biology teacher. She started introducing herself and introducing the module. The first topic we talked about was cells systems and homeostasis. The first part of the morning was focused on explaining the different types of cells and the structure, I thought was very good to review how the system works and I felt like if I was going back in time when I was in high school. During the second half of the morning , we spoke about the functions of the human body, and we looked in detail the anatomical position and the body cavities and which region they belong to. My favourite part of the discussion was going into detail about the chemical level, because I felt like now I have better understanding of some procedures that I personally performed at work( Uranalysis and VBG). During lunch time I have used the information learnt yesterday from the tour in the library, to go and find a good anatomy book that suits me. I think that without having had a tour of the library, would have been a challenge for me to find the location of the nursing books. After the lunch break we finished the discussion regarding the structure of the cells and we started to have a close eye into how the cells work in the system. I thought that even though I studied before this lesson has been a great opportunity for me to understand better how cells work , and it’s amazing the fact that now I will be able to apply in my actual job the learnings from today. Overall the day went well, the only change I would make is the dynamics of the explanations, were very fast and I have to admit I was out of exercise on taking notes, moreover next time I will be more prepared and try to adapt myself to the style of learning.

Title of learning activity: Nursing associate programme

 

Diary of Learning activity:

Today was the first official day at university. To begin the day, me and the class introduced ourselves and we explained the roles we all cover in our trust of provenience. I thought this was a great activity because the mix of experiences and skills in my class is variegate, and I am confident I will learn a lot from each one of my classmates. Following presentations , we did an ice breaking exercise where we all explored whether we wanted to go back in time /or move forward in life and reflect on what would change from present. The day went very well in my opinion and after getting to know each other better we started the process of learning. Just before having a break we were shown how to access the university portal and how to create our portfolios. I would love to say that was very straightforward, but I have to admit that I was quite confused at the beginning; however i am sure that with time and a bit more practice will be much easier. During afternoon Colin , our teacher, started explaining how different can be the process of learning. He explained us how important is to mange correctly our time and he spoke about the principles of learning. Moreover he spoke about the importance of the roles of students and teacher. I felt that was a very good refresher as I haven’t been in a class from a very long time and I thought was great to understand that we can feel completely supported. During the last hour of the class , we spoke about reflection and how this is very important for the role of nurses and NA and moreover in real life. I was very familiar with this topic , because every week I have to write a reflective account for work , but was very interesting to dig a bit deeper and learn more about it. Overall I am very please to say that the day was great and I am looking forward to learn more and more.

Title of learning activity: Nursing Associate Induction week Day 2

 

Diary of Learning activity:

During today’s session we explored deeper the differences between roles , the importance of professionalism, accountability and Code of conduct, also we looked into different ways of learning and understood how to face the reading of an academic article. The morning was invested to review the home works that our lecturer assigned us yesterday. Me and the rest of the class were asked to create three groups and were given 40 minutes to preparate a presentation about Accountability. I think that the presentation overall went well, however I think that would have been better if during the preparation all the class mates had an input on it , instead some just followed the idea of the others and that reflected on the final presentation. I am confident that next time , we all work more collaboratively and support the people that for different reasons did not give much input to the group this time. Afternoon was nice , we had the opportunity to have a little tour of the library, I thought was vital for me and my classmates in order to find our way throughout the massive number of books. Once back in the class Colin made us read parts of an Academic article and we reflected on how important is to read them and be able to understand the different parts of the article. I had already experienced the reading of an academic article, however was very good to refresh and to understand the relation to my nursing career. My favourite topic of the day was certainly when we talked about body language and the different learning styles, was inspiring to get to know how my classmates with different backgrounds and cultures  approach to learning in a different way than mine. Even the second day went brilliantly , I felt the atmosphere in the class was very inclusive and I am starting to build relationships with the rest of the class, however if i have to change something to improve in the future classes I will definitely skip some of the interruptions.
