During the lesson as a group we had read act 1 of ‘Ghosts’ By Ibsen. This allowed us to discuss Ibsens intentions when writing the play and understand what he is trying to connate.
For example : The character Engstrand is written as a disabled character as the characters leg, therefore is portrayed as negative due to his disability. This would not be done in contemporary playwrights as it is portraying old stereotypes and conventions.
From this discussion, it allowed us to come up and discuss the different themes of the play, in particular we we had found that the play is heavily connotating aspects of class division and religion through characters such as Manders.
In rehearsals we had separated into groups and then tried to portray one of the scenes in the play, in particular scene 1. In groups I had directed the scene in a naturalistic way and with the scripts in order to understand how the characters would first interact with each other. We had developed movement in the scene by constantly readjusting the proxemics in the characters and knowing when the characters would change position after a line. We had then tried to develop the scene and bring some abstract elements by creating abstract characters that would show Engstrands and Regines emotions throughout the scene.
These abstract characters that would be played by myself and another actor would have opposing emotions with each other and try to understand the nature of how the character we are portraying normally acts. We would no use dialogue but use subtle movements and try to react to the lines spoken by the actors. We would also keep a close distance to the characters emotions we are showing. This allowed us to understand the main emotions that are being felt in this scene but also helped to understand the tone and mood throughout each of the scenes.
