Week 3 Workshop & Pina

During our Monday seminar, we had worked . on a lighting workshop. In this workshop I had understand the multiple uses of lighting in a performance. Examples of this is …

  • Lighting can be used for scene change
  • Creating a mood/atmosphere
  • Creating cinematographically effect
  • Creating a particular focus on stage to the audience / Highlighting a particular thing

During the workshop we were given a variety of different lighting such as spotlights and different shapes on the floor made up of the lighting which we then were then made to create short scenes in order to understand the different ways we can use lighting. For example we created a ‘Limbo’ situation when using a box shaped lighting and made one side of the lighting portray ‘life’ and the other side ‘death’. This allowed me to also understand the use of shadows contrasting  with the lighting and how the shadows can help create a theme alongside the lighting used.

Another lighting we had also worked with is a lighting that would be placed on the floor facing upwards. When standing in front of it , shadows had been created on thew walls. As a group we had come together and formed and created a giant bug from the shadows by lining up together in order. Therefore this allowed me to understand that lightning can be used to create abstract pieces and can be used to further the plot.

During our Wednesday rehearsals, as a group we had sat down and watched Pina , after we had discussed the films and elements used, in particular we had been fascinated in which the way props were used and was seen as a stimulus for the dance. An example of this would be water being floored on the floor while a dance choreography would be done and also someone throwing dirt on a woman’s back while dancing in a slow and repetitive tempo.Image result for pina
