Week 7 – Act 2

In this rehearsal we had started to developĀ  our first scene of act 2. We had introduce the use of the props and lighting in order to create tensions towards the audience but also to create meaning. For example the use of a piano playing high key notes while pastor Manders is walking towards a coffin that is covered with sheets at a very slow pace builds the tension to the audience and and makes the feel unease by the situation. Another propp we had introduced is the use of an umbrella, we had used the umbrella for multiple reasons in this scene. One use of the umbrella is for Oswald to use the open umbrella when sitting on his coffin while the characters Mrs Alving and Manders had fought between themselves by taking turns in forcing the umbrella down onto Oswald , this would show how both characters are trying to impose and restrict Oswald’s freedom throughout act 2. The use of Oswald sitting on top of a coffin symbolises that he’s getting closer to death due to his syphilis disease and is being slowly being pushed towards death by the two characters.

In this scene I had used the umbrella to create power. As the character Mr Alving , I had walked on stage while having my back to the audience breaking a theatre rule in order to signify and impose that Mr Alving is just a big and large dominate figure. As I was on stage I had picked up the closed umbrella which was laying on the floor in front of the coffin , as soon as I had picked the umbrella up I had spring my posture up while having my shoulders back and placed the umbrella on the left side of the waist symbolising that the umbrella is a sword and weapon. This had helped create the idea and character that Mr Alving is dangerous by using this propp as a weapon alongside the change in posture which helped build a soldier image to the audience.
