This reflection is based on my experiences as a student nurse over the last two years. Working in a team has taught me that communication in health and social care underpins everything professionals do and can influence the quality of service patients to receive. Poor communication among members of inter-professional teams impacts the quality of care patients receive and can lead to various negative patient experiences. I’ve noticed that the use of professional jargon, abbreviations, and poor handwriting are all factors that contribute to poor communication. As a result, I made it a personal goal to avoid these behaviours, and if I did, for example, use jargon, I made sure it was universal so there was no miscommunication between the patient and me or other nursing professionals.
