The following will reflect on the ECG study day undertaken as part of our simulated practice placement. On this day we had both a practical session where we undertook ECGs on each other and on mannequins to ensure we knew the correct placement. We also did a simulated scenario, in which we performed an A-E assessment, and the patient was having a cardiac issue in which we needed to diagnose and treat. In the theory session, we refreshed our knowledge on the 5-step method used to analyse an ECG. I found this day helpful to consolidate and refresh knowledge. We have previously covered this content and I was fortunate enough to have my last placement in cardiology where I was able to practice these skills in real life. However, due to the complexity of these skills it was helpful to have another opportunity to go over the practical and theory again. ECG analysis is a skill that I am aware will take a long period of time to master. As a result in future practice, I will feel more confident to analyse an ECG and be able to recognise abnormalities. This will enable me to practice more effectively and preserve the safety of my patients as I will be able to identify earlier when something is abnormal and escalate appropriately. I am aware that these skills are still a work in progress but reflecting on the study day I am happy with my knowledge so far. I was able to identify abnormal ECG’s such as atrial fibrillation and STEMI. To improve I will continue to practice these skills when I have the opportunity and continue to consolidate knowledge in my own time.
