Title of learning activity: Reflection – Induction & welcome week
Diary of Learning activity
Registration and introduction – Introduction to NA course, its contents and what we hope to achieve at the end of two-year training.
Formal introduction with members of the cohort including mentor, their background and work experience.
Form filling and registration.
Tour of the college, to familiarise with new environment and facilities included in the premises e.g., libraries, checkpoints, classroom, quiet room for study.
Introduction to learning platform – MOODLE, Eportfolios
Discussion about adult learning, its implications and impact; explored differences between adult and children learning.
Discussion on reflection, models of reflection – e.g., Driscoll & Gibbs
We saw models of reflection to analyse own situation at a starting point, strategise ideas into critical thinking, discover what learning arises from the reflection, propose actions for improvement and towards the desired outcome.
Communication skills – The importance of establishing communication, as well as misunderstandings that could stem from poor communication.
Time management – its impact for the duration of nursing associate training (2 years),
Negative aspects include – How it could affect work-life balance.
Time management, reduced social life, demand on own time, deadlines.
Positive aspects include – additional skills, contribute to develop critical thinking, additional clinical knowledge, self-confidence within own scope of duties and responsibilities, educating patients, teaching and mentoring peers at work. Modelling appropriate professional behaviour at work – “even if no one is watching”, acting and working within appropriate professional boundaries with colleagues and service users. Promoting and maintaining a healthy work environment, using service & resources efficiently and appropriately as per training and skills enhancements, following national legislations in place, health and safety, policies and procedures, e.g., clinical and non-clinical waste segregation in appropriate waste receptacles.
Acting in the patient’s best interests, promoting independence and the right to choose/consent for the delivery of care, advocating and safeguarding in respect to the Mental Capacity Act recommendations and protected characteristics.
