What?

Lecture about critical thinking

Before the lecture, we had a catch-up session relating to our essay assignments.

Individual concerns and progress on the essay were mentioned.

I had a few concerns about my essay, and I was given guidance on what to do.

The submission of a draft essay was also discussed.

Definition of critical thinking and our own understanding of critical thinking.

Critical thinking in professional practice avoids making assumptions, making sure advice given is evidence-based, accurately assessing normal and worsening conditions and decision-making and problem-solving.

Key critical thinking skills

What?

Lecture about Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity

Now What?

We had a discussion about equality, diversity and inclusivity.

Each and everyone were asked to define equality and it seems there was confusion as everyone defined it as treating everyone the same or fairly but what stuck in my mind was it was defined as equal opportunities in your fullest potential.

Equality definition is making sure people are treated fairly, meeting individual’s need appropriately and challenging the factors that limit individual’s opportunities.

Three pictures was shown and each one shows different ways to treat each individual but the last picture was the best one, it removed the barrier so everyone has the chance.

Diversity was discussed and each of us gave our definition of it.

The importance of knowing and being aware of it.

The following were highlighted:

NMC Code (2018 1.3  to void making assumptions and recognise diversity and individual choice. Examples were given.

  • NMC Standards of Proficiency 1.14 provide and promote non-discriminatory, person-centered and sensitive care at all times, reflecting on people’s values and beliefs, diverse backgrounds, cultural characteristics, language requirements, needs, and preferences, taking account of any need for adjustments

Inclusivity was also included in the discussion, and this is where came my given example.

For example: if a meeting will be in a venue and among the participants was a person with a disability like using a wheelchair. The people who arrange the meeting should consider a venue where there is access to lifts or ramps.

The protected characteristics were mentioned under The Equality Act (2010) which cannot be used as reasons to treat people unfairly. These are the following:

  • Age
  • Disability
  • Gender-re-assignment
  • Marriage and civil partnership
  • Pregnancy and maternity care
  • Race
  • Religion and belief
  • Sex
  • Sexual orientation

So what?

This lecture helps me thoroughly understand what discrimination is. It reminds me what the things I experienced that I thought were okay but after the discussion it made me realise some are not.

Understanding equality, diversity, and inclusivity is easy but knowing the real definition could be tricky as all got similarities.

Now what?

This lecture will help me apply my knowledge and improve my skills in knowing what is fair and what is not and be mindful especially to individuals who are in protected characteristics.
