Title of Learning Activity: First placement experience.

I shared my experience in my first placements with the class. I am very pleased and happy as I found everyone in my first placement was very friendly and accommodating. It was a completely different setting compared to my ward. I met my Practice Assessor and Supervisors and nominated them on my ePAD. I completed the placement orientation and first initial interview on time. I was allocated to learn in the recovery room and learned a lot from highly skilled nurses.

On admission, I observed completing the pre-operative checklist. I learned to assist patients in preparation for surgery and conduct some tests (e.g. blood sugar check, urinalysis, checking patients’ vital signs, and educating patients in wearing compression stockings to prevent blood clots developing in the leg, which is known as deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

Recovery: I learned from recovery nurses when they received patients who had just come out of surgery and were under local and general anaesthetic. They used the SBAR tool and A to E assessments and constant monitoring. Offering patients something to eat and drink and monitoring bladder and bowel health.

Discharge: Patients were carefully monitored and assessed, educated on the post-operative plan, details about medication to take home, and given more information in case of emergency after discharge.

My other classmates also shared their experiences and we were given information on who to contact if we encounter any problems with our ePAD.
