Reflection on Learning Activity (include model of reflection e.g. Driscoll or Gibbs):

Driscoll (2007)

The lecture in the morning is about developing professional and academic skills for nursing associates.

The lecturer mentioned how important the academic integrity and academic writing was discussed and explain the main points needed to have a successful one. It is important to know the right word and tone.

Caring for Carers was the topic in the afternoon.

The word burnout was defined and its difference to compassion fatigue. Then a video presentation was played and a psychiatrist named Guy Winch Ph.D. talked about psychological health. Why physical health is more important than psychological health?

Not looking after your psychological health can have negative impact like loneliness or low-esteem and worst suicide.

Rosanna Amour-a well- being officer joined us through videocall and gave us information on where for student support and access when it comes to any other concern like from career, financially or study support and a two -day training for Mental health first aider is available too.

The word rumination came along and it was a word I am not familiar with so I research it.

‘Rumination involves repetitive and passive thoughts focused on the causes and effects of a person’s distress.’ (verywellmind.com)

As a Nursing Associate I must comply with the standards and behaviours according to The Code (2018). I must uphold the integrity when it comes to doing academic works. It should be my own and free from plagiarism.  Additional tools to enhance academic works are very helpful but not to completely rely on it.

Then I have more knowledge about psychological health is important, same as physical health. I need to make sure I look after myself in  way that I wont be burnout or stress and there are people who can help if needed.

Driscoll

The lecture is to understand health and illness across the lifespan and cells, systems and homeostasis. A presentation was used on the lecture. Anatomical positions and positional terms were shown and it was interesting to identify each part.

The body cavities and regions images were clearly shown. It was very fascinating to know the Latin names for the regions of the body and also identifying the cavities and region of abdominal area. There was a recap of Atom and Molecules including cells and type of cells. The levels of organization were tackled from chemical, cellular, tissue, organismal or organ system level. On the chemical level; NaCl and electrolytes were discussed and how it is important to have it in the body. The cellular level being acidic, alkali, measured in ph.

Cell, human cell structure and cell components were included on the lecture and it was quite interesting to learn about the different types of cells from what cell connects the body part, to cells that gather information and the differences on what cells look like and their characteristics.

And last but not the least on the lecture was about homeostasis and how the body maintains homeostasis.

How the ability of the body to adjusts in a lot of conditions.

All topics in the lecture help to understand and identify why good health is important and recognising early signs of illness to quickly take actions or escalate.

Reflection on Learning Activity (include model of reflection e.g. Driscoll or Gibbs):

I came in the room with my fellow trainee and everyone was a bit busy trying to complete and sort their learning logs from yesterday and Colin started by discussing the KSB included for the learning log. He emphasized a few KSB that should be included on our learning log like the K1 Understand the code: Professional standards of practice and behaviour for nurses, midwives and nursing associates (NMC 2018).

He asked us what is a Nursing Associate; each one gave their own definition like it is a bridge between Healthcare Assistant and Registered Nurse in providing care or Nursing Associate is freeing the Registered Nurse to focus on more complex patients and he explain that it is a protected title, registered profession, must obey and follow the NMC code, administer medication and can initiate care. He also tackles the different role of Nursing Associate from HCA and RN. Although Nursing associate can initiate care, Registered Nurse will do the initial care plan of a patient and also attend the triage.

Then we had a group work to research and give our input with the topics Professionalism, Accountability and The Code. Each group participated and communicate effectively with their allocated topics, they show their respect and letting others speak and they listen to one another including Colin. I was included in the group where we discuss The Code. I was allocated to explain one of the codes of conduct which is to Promote Professionalism and Trust.  I seek Colin’s input to ensure the topic was discussed thoroughly. It was a great morning and all trainees were accounted for as we signed the attendance sheet for the Ofsted requirements and we had our lesson in a safe work and care environment. Colin ended the lesson by saying he was pleased with our behaviour so far.

Reflection on Learning Activity (include model of reflection e.g. Driscoll or Gibbs):

The afternoon starts with Library tour with Academic Librarian Stevie Russel. She showed us how to find books, access online and where we can find most nursing books. Nursing books are mainly located at the second floor and starts with 610 barcode. It was beneficial as we will be doing some research and book references in the future. Then we head back to the room and Colin explained to us the effective way of reading a paper or an article, what to look for, like reading the abstract and conclusions, if its relevant to the topic we are looking for and most specially if it is evidence based. We also introduced to VARK (Visual, Aural/Auditory, Read/Write and Kinaesthetic) which is a questionnaire to identify an individual’s learning style. Each topic was discussed clearly by Colin and it he also mentioned that VARK is aa learning style that help not just the learner but also the teacher where the teacher can adjust their teaching according to the learner’s learning style. It is a very important component to understand why certain things don’t work with other learners. Colin ends his lesson by asking us to search, download, and fill up a VARK questionnaire and bring it on Friday and also not to forget to do our learning log and reflection for today. Everyone listen attentively to him and show good behaviour throughout the lesson.

Reflection Reflection on Learning Activity (Driscoll)

One of the lessons today was about the Role of a Nursing Associate.

I have a little bit of idea of what a Nursing Associate do because I worked with them in the hospital. I am unsure on the scope of their duties, responsibilities and legal obligations.

Colin explained the role of a Nursing Associate that it is a protected title, registered profession, must obey and follow the NMC code, administer medication and can initiate care. He also tackles the different role of Nursing Associate from HCA and RN. Although Nursing associate can initiate care, Registered Nurse will do the initial care plan of a patient and also attend the triage.

This information helped me understand more of what a Nursing Associate duties and responsibilities. I will use it and share with co-workers to inform and avoid misconception.

Title of learning activity: Introduction Day 1

Diary of Learning activity

(itemise learning activity and reflect on the main points of learning from each. You should identify for each entry the relevant KSB)

First, we started the day by registration around 9:30 in the morning as it is an Ofsted requirement to monitor our attendance, followed by introduction by each trainee, place of work and what kind of care we provide.  In between the introduction Colin, our lecturer, added some inputs on the basis where we were working with and also share his knowledge and past clinical and life experiences and one that stick in my mind was about when he got a visit from the Infection and Control official on how important hand washing was.

Next was the Ice breaker exercise where we were asked to think if we have the ability to go back in time or go forward, to the future. What do we want to do or who do we want to meet?

Filip mentioned he wanted to go back 35 years. Because of his childhood experience, it had a big impact on his current life choices. Harold would like to go back in the 80’s where there’s no mobile phones and where people are not slave on it and some would like to go forward to the future, the rest of the group mostly wanted to see how their kids are doing.

Colin, mentioned that we will meet other lecturer named: Angela and Maria who will be helping us in our module then we had a coffee break after.

We met Mr. Vivek Rajendra after, who was kind enough to help us navigate through Moodle and eportfolios on the University of Roehampton website.

He and Colin taught us a lot on how to find our way through the Moodle and assisted most of us when we were struggling to follow.

There was an entry on the Moodle where we were asked to upload our Care certificates and Amy managed to upload hers.

We continued by listening to Colin about Adult Learning and Managing Time.  He discussed the differences between Adult and Children learning and we were asked beforehand to give our own understanding.

On Time management, we were given tips and how to prioritise our study.

Then Colin had time to talk about reflection. He begun by asking what we already knew about the definition of reflection. Each one gave their definition of it, and then he emphasised the importance of reflection. An example was given of when a patient’s oxygen level was low and what you can do in that situation, how competent you are and when to seek help. He showed us the 3 models of reflection which are Discoll (2000) What? So What? Now what, Kolb (1984) Reflective cycle and Gibbs Reflective Cycle (1988)

And last thing to be discussed was the ground rules, each trainee and including Colin gave ground rules that were agreed by everyone. He also emphasized that our behaviour reflects the dignity of our workplace.

Gibbs Reflective Cycle (1988)

Introduction Day 1

I came this morning for the first day of Induction for the Nurse Associate apprenticeship feeling unsure, curious and optimistic.  Unsure because I don’t know the content of the day, curious because I am meeting other HCAs who work in different fields to mine. Optimistic that I will learn a lot from the lecturers.

The day started very well when each of us introduced ourselves and Colin, our lecturer threw some inputs every now and then, including on the ice-breaker exercise.

We had the opportunity to meet Mr. Vivek Rajendra who helped us navigate on Moodle on the University website.

Then Colin discussed the adult learning, time management and the introduction to reflection. And last but not the least, we established some ground rules that were agreed by all.

I have learnt a lot about the other trainees and with Colin.

I wish I communicated more with the other trainees and got to know them more but I think there was not enough time today.

I will try to be more pro-active and communicate more with Colin and other trainees.
