Towards the end of my final school placement I spent a long time assessing and marking my KS3 classes in order to give them their final end of year grade for PE.
This involved marking and grading my student’s end of year theory tests as well as giving my students a practical grade based on their performance in our PE lessons over the final term.
We were asked to input this data onto a specially designed matrix which would then create an overall grade for the students and allow the PE department to view all the grades across the year groups.
Once this was complete I was then asked to produce a report for each student, providing positive and negative comments for each student in relation to their performance in my PE lessons. This included inputting their ‘overall PE grade’ for the year and by grading students 1-4 for their attitude to learning.
I have also helped to mark the BTEC and GCSE end of unit tests for the KS4 classes I have been teaching during my second placement school.
Throughout my training year I understood the importance of completing formative assessment to help me judge the progress of my students in each of my lessons. This was completed during my PE lessons with my students using activities such as think-pair-share, thumbs up- thumbs down, Q and A plenaries and self-assessment.
