TS4 Planning and teaching well structured lessons

Below is an example of a lesson I taught recently in which I used the SPORT EDUATION MODEL (Siedentop, 1984). This model really helped me to teach a well structured PE lesson. I tried this as it was a model I had researched in depth for an assignment and which I had observed work really well. I found this model to be a really good way of managing behaviour and giving students ownership and leadership in the lesson. For this reason I decided to try this myself with one of my classes.

Sport Education Model

Basketball (Dribbling) – Year 7 boys lesson plan

Could work effectively for KS3 (7, 8, 9).

Firstly I grouped the students into 4 groups of 6/7 in each group. Each team was given a team name related to the sport (Basketball lesson – Lakers, Nicks, Bulls etc) and a colour set of bibs which they will keep for the duration of the term (e.g. blue, green, red, yellow).

Roles were given to each player in each team:

  • Captain – (EAL student to help with communication) Organise and lead your team, motivate group and make sure they are on task.
  • Warm up coach – Leads their group during warm ups. They can draw on recent knowledge and research fun warm up games.
  • Skills coach – Will describe key learning points from the skills and will try and lead their group during the skills phase.
  • Equipment monitor – In charge of collecting equipment for their group. e.g Bibs, Video camera for analysis.
  • Media Representative – In charge of collecting and articulating responses to questions from the team.
  • Rules and tactics – This student is responsible for making sure the whole team is aware of the rules/positions of a certain game. Will at times be asked to umpire and referee games.
  • Analyst – Observe performance and highlight with the team or teacher to come up with feedback which will enable development. Come up with goals for the team.

Points are given throughout the lesson for positive and negatives. E.g. first class to sit down in their team when I blow my whistle = 1 bonus point. Team that gives a good answer = 1 bonus point. Talking when teacher talking = 1 point taken away. Points are kept throughout the term and keeping a visual (on whiteboard) is desirable.

  • Explain lesson aims/objectives and keywords/terminology once teams are sorted and roles given.
  • Complete Warm Up –  3 stages (Pulse raiser, dynamic stretches, static stretches)

Lesson objectives:

– Students understand how to dribble correctly.

– Students understand the rules of dribbling and why we do it in Basketball.

The focus of the lesson was dribbling in Basketball. For this reason games were introduced to aid student’s development in this skill and keep the lesson fun.

Stuck in the mud: one team catch, the other three teams dribble with a basketball around a sports hall or large space (every student has a ball apart from catchers). When caught students must stand with ball in front of them and legs open. They get back into the game if someone can bounce the ball through their legs.

Zombie Apocalypse: One student is the zombie. Everyone else dribbles with the basketballs around the sports hall or large space . If caught you PLACE your ball to the side (health and safety) and join the zombie.

*Shielding was also demonstrated quickly before zombie apocalypse as I wanted to show the students how to keep the ball from the ‘taggers’.

*If blood is spilt pause game and clear up (Health and safety)

Game situation: Gates using cones are positioned on the court at an angle to encourage the dribbling learnt in the lesson. E.g. if a student can dribble through the gate during the game it is an extra point for their team.

Inclusion: Must adapt drills for disabled students (There was a student in a wheelchair in the lesson). During the game situation this student was not allowed to be tackled and they were allowed to pass the ball without it being blocked from close range. An interception was fine as long as opposition were not to close.  This student could also earn extra points compared to others if they could roll their wheelchair through the gate with the ball on their lap.

Debrief – What have students learnt today about dribbling????

*Winning team at the end of the term gets reward at end of term/school year (pizza party, chocolate etc).
