Computing BSE1

On my first day of the BSE1 I had a INSET day introducing a new system Purple Mash.

Purple mash links to the National curriculum, and it contains many tools to enable the children to create work, for example you can create art work in 2 publish, a story in 2 create a story, also spreadsheets in 2 calculate. Purple mash seems like the perfect companion to help children understand IT skills, assist in Maths, English and Science. The school and Purple mash ensured that all of the work covered in topic across the key stages will be in a detailed programme on the system.

I enjoyed working with Purple mash, we all were able to access the system and create work with it and explore the music and even the recipe steps!

Purple mash is very child friendly and can link to Microsoft office programmes, IWB, Accelerated reader/Star reader, Matheletics and Espresso.

I would like the opportunity to work with Purple mash again after this placement.

We also looked at the national curriculum for computing at key stages 1 and 2 and the head of IT explained the statutory requirements for IT and how we can teach computer science, Information technology and Digital literacy. We also spoke about safeguarding to make sure that all of the children are kept safe on the internet.

Computational thinking…

It was brilliant to add to my understanding of computational thinking from the TED talk ‘How algorithms shape our world’ and listening to Radio 4’s More or Less on ‘odd socks and algorithms‘ in this lesson. It was interesting to think about the most efficient ways of sorting objects and how computer programmes can aid in this by creating a set of specific steps and rules.

It would be good to use computational thinking in Modern foreign languages, the children could create sentences in english then translate to German/French/Spanish and then using google translate we could check for accuracy. Also beneficial to use in maths with filling in gaps of algebra equations or going through step by step of solving a long multiplication problem.

There are several ways that coding could be used in the teaching of KS1 and KS2 children. It is vital that the children see link the steps in real life (the steps to make a jam sandwich) to the steps in virtual life (the steps to create a webpage).
