  • I shadowed and helped the OT during her shower assessment session with one of the patients to give her best way of giving personal care.
  • I was able to participate well with OT and communicate well with patient as well.
  • I made sure that patient’s dignity and privacy was maintained through out the assessment.
  • I was able to see Carendo multipurpose Hygiene chair and the functions understood how it is different and useful.
  • I have understood why that special kind of chair used.
  • We assessed how comfortable and safe the patient is in the chair and her her ability to recognition.
  • The patient we able to communicate via verbally which was very useful in the session, a very good patient participation was there during the session.
  • Since the patient was comfortable even when the patient was wet within the chair and we were using the correct size of sling it will be advised for in the future as well.

Apart from that I got a chance for a discussion with OT. She mention about why they do the shower assessment and how it will be useful for the patient especially in giving personal care

She also mentioned about the other roles of OT and how effective it will before the patient overall development, for example, in cognitive thinking, optimisation, and disability management.

overall, I understood that the role of a OT is to make and help the patients to be independent as much as they could.

Practice Supervisor’s comments:

Anna asked very appropriate questions around the OT role in the vent service to further her learning. She communicated well with staff and to the patient. She interacted well with the patient throughout the shower session and assisted in maintaining dignity and safety of the patient. She was helpful in setting up and participated well in the shower assessment.

Student reflection

I shadowed the physiotherapist with other two physiotherapist students in standing practice session for a long term care resident. Though, the patient was blind patient has ability for verbal communication which was very effective in the session. I asked the patient consent by introducing myself to observe and join with the physiotherapist before stating the session. I was able to see and understand the use foot splint. Initially, I was able to observe how to start the any session by describing the what they are going to do in the session. Then, I was able to see how to analyse the muscle strength checking. Later With the patient, we practised standing balance and weight transfers during a number of sit-to-stand exercises. Then, we discussed We talked about therapy progressions and rehabilitation principles.

I think it will be very good if I could spend more time with the physiotherapists to understand what there way of working and to analyse how effective each practice session make into patient neuro disability lifestyle.

Practice Supervisor’s comments:

Anna joined us for a session of standing practice with one of our long term care residents. We discussed rehab principles and progressions of treatment. Anna observed use of foot splint, we discussed tendon release surgery. We completed several sit to stands with the patient and worked on standing balance and weight transfers. Anna displayed good communication when introducing herself to the patient.
