He Hit Me (And It Felt Like A Kiss) by The Crystals
Task

Goal
For this week’s task, I did not necessarily re-write the entire scene from last week’s entry, more of edited it to fit the new setting. It is very clear that I lined out the dialogue and descriptions of some parts as it did not fit into the script anymore. The bold/highlighted parts are the new things I put in.
I altered the year it was originally in (2021) to 2002. Setting it almost two decades ago allowed me to modify the language, as in the way my characters spoke and spoke to each other. I also was able to remove certain phrases like “I’m pro-choice” which was the first things said a loud in the original piece because that phrase in 2002 still had not been popularised just yet.
I pondered if I should change the song that plays on the radio only to realise it came out in 2007! So I changed it to He Hit Me (And It Felt Like A Kiss) by The Crystals. This song is not about enjoying pain, it is far from it actually. it is about being in a destructive relationship, a woman who is being subjected to domestic violence, yet she is so in love with him that she cannot leave him for abusing her. That’s why “it felt like a kiss” is in the title, because she is blinded by love. It’s a situation many women, even men, can find themselves in and is heart breaking. However, Mother doesn’t know this because the title alone just offends her.
