I also thought about costumes in regards to my character ‘The married woman’. I wanted her clothing to be something old or maybe ripped or probably walking barefoot. I was thinking to have her hair tied back as well. The prop involved in this would be a buggy as it states she pushes a buggy around. I thought it would be a great discription because not many married women take of themselves back in the day and didn’t want her dressing fancy.

It would be better in a much wider enviroment where there is enough space for me to film myself playing my chracter so people can get a clearer view on whats happening. I’m use to speaking in plays so this one might a be a bit difficult but I have to learn to be able to stay in character. a disadvantage about this is that i’m the only one  playing one of the married couple so at the same time it would be difficult to act my character when my husband isn’t present. Another idea I thought of since I’m alone, I could pretend to be a married and pretend that mu husband is with me everywhere I go.

As i’ve mentioned before there were only limited people in the class, we created a list of people casted listed below:

Characters in the play:

This is the list of peope we have so far far participating in the project. It was difficcult to get others to contribute and pick what role they wanted to particpate in.

witheverything going on i decided to record audio on my opinion about my about play and spoke about anything else i’ve missed out. It was important for me to write things down so i can have a look back at it and to further develope my ideas on how I could stage my scene . no one knows exactly how long we will be in the situation that we are in right now or how it will effect us but at the same time it’s good take things into consideration becasue with all the other assessments we are getting prepared for I have people that i can discuss the assessments with if i’m unsure about anything and try to go over the script on a daily basis. because everything has been sorted it out and out of the way I can focus on this project and if there is anything i’ve missed anything i can always check on my classmates or go back on notes that i have taken during grup discussions. This was a very unexpected situation but the good thing about this is we kept going and still cooperated with group discussuions and giving feedback on eachother.
acting is something that i’m passionate about as i’ve been doing it for a very long time, this project was easier for me to be able to show people what I am capable of doing and show people how passionate Drama is for me. During the last couple of days not being able to see eachother face to face i’ve managed to go over the script and spending time working on my assignements. Things have been very srtessful but I am grateful for tutors supporting me and making I am on top of the task and know what is is that I am doing to help me achieve a good grade. With this project, I need to be able to stay in character without laughing or getting distarcted because that draws the audeince attention and trying not to overthink things. All I can do is to focus on this script and generate an idea of how i can interpret differing body gestures to express my character as I play a married woman. I could portray that I love my husband and use techniques like eye contact or interacting with eachother by touch eachother on the shoulder or on the cheek to show that we are a married couple. In thr play it is all stated that they carry a buggy but there’s no baby inside. My ineterpretation of that could that it could be their imagnary baby or they are trying to concieve a child that they probably always wanted.

Following from our last rehearsal before the strike that took place, there were only a few people that attended the rehearsal but we used that time effectively to recap on what we discussed last lesson and used the same warm up from Ioanna’s class.  For reference there are a few pictures taken from our rehearsal process.  Whilst taking notes, it was important for me to choose whether to act as well knowing that were limited amount of people in the class and to achieve getting a better grade I thought it would be useful to act as well so that I am not just doing tech and lighting. It was a bit of a challenge with the strike disrupting our plans but our attendance was mandatory and it was important that we come together as a team in our own time to work on the script. I believe that people may have been shy and haven’t been able to open up like myself but it’s also good to explore different things, take ideas down and be able to be free to perform in front of people because this is a big project we are working on and cooperation is important for all of us.

During our last class together we discussed how we would put our performance together. because the majority of the class didn’t attend class it was frustrating for those that wanted to get things and we can’t be able to put on a successful performance with lack of communication and people not turning up. with the people who did show up, we thought it was best to continue without them and discussed our role. The good thing about this is that we didn’t need to rely on other people but it was disappointing because it does have an effect on others. we are all in a group chat so whenever we needed catching up or someone is stuck on something, our groupchat is there to help one another. In the end I decided to be the married woman. because I wasn’t familair with that particular part of the script, we couldn’t focus on that specific scene so i set myself a task that i learn the married couple scene by next week so we can jump right straight to the scene and figure out as a class how we can stage this scene with more people hopefully joining the lesson.

The week after meeting up, things got a bit hectic for us because of this pandemic happening which forced us to have online lessons which was difficult for us as we couldn’t meet face to face but it was beneficial for us to have these online classes because it didn’t stop us from doing the project  and we managed to come up with a plan on how we can proceed with the prodcutions with all this peandemic happening.  After having online classes with Ioanna it has made things so much easier for us because we came up with a plan on how we could move on with the assessment and now its all about communication and being well prepared for the assessement as well as knowing what to do and being prepared for it.

week 3

week 3

In this module we are currently working on a live performance that would be taking place during Rope Festival which will consist of one or more roles within the production team. Individually people will be asked to do an independent research and study for this upcoming project.  As part of this, we will be looking at Ota Shogo’s ‘The water station’.  Unfortunately because of the pandemic, it has been very difficult for everyone to come together for this project to take place. As I have missed the first 2 weeks of class I did some research on the water station play which is really interesting as this play only uses our body movements.

We started simple warm ups to help with our breathing and balance which I think would be very useful for our play which includes a lot of slow movements with our feet and body as it also helps you to have control of your own body if you are doing slow movements.. We also did a few techniques where we interact with each other using eye contact and slowly changing body gestures. At first it was quite difficult for me to have eye contact with other members of the class as I tend to laugh a lot or stay out of character quickly but it fit well with the task because it draws attention with other people and it gives them an opportunity to observe the interaction that is taking place and it also enables us to generate ideas for the project.  In reference to this exercise I have linked a warm up video from National theatre which demonstrates the exercise we’ve done in preparation for our project. It was very hard for me to balance my body at first but a trick I also use to help to control my  balance is imagining being pulled by a string and closing my eyes. Another thing I have discovered when moving in slow speed is that being able to maintain stability isn’t easy without wobbling or falling to the ground.

After doing research on the water station I had to think about Roles that I can participate in as part of my grade.  One of them was being in charge of lighting and technical work for the production.  As I am responsible for lighting and tech work, lighting brings emotions within the scenes and the characters. It also creates atmosphere giving the audience a good quality to make it more pleasurable for them to view what is happening on stage. Because there isn’t enough people in the class we had to remove a few casts to make things easier and run smoother. There were a few people who wanted to take on the role of lighting and sound as well as stage management, directing and of course acting. It is important that everyone contributes because this goes towards our grade and also the fact that this is a big project that we were all looking forward to. As part of our task we had to make sure that we are familiar with the script so that when we next have our lesson with Ioanna, we can discuss implications of the play, meaning behind the scenes and roles we are looking to participate in.

In the beginning of the play the scene start of pitch black and as the girl walks on we can then focus the light on her because the girl starts off the scene walking on stage. As I was reading the script something that I discovered may not be accurate but in the first scene the girl comes on stage it says:

The girl expectedly stops

The back of the walking girl

The neck twists around

Towards the way she came

Towards the far expanse

Her face turns

A white light could be focusing on her only as she’s walking in as the stage directions state and it could convey that she might’ve remembered something or spotted something from a far distance. That may be another reason why she could’ve turned her head. It also states that water music plays in the background as she is walking to get water. The rehearsal process wasn’t easy as not many people attended rehearsal but we managed to move on without those that didn’t attend and set the stage how it would’ve looked. A task we each of us set is to look at the script, think about what is happening in the scene then we can come back next lesson to go over it and think about staging it.
