A Voice for the Voiceless

Needless to say, we live in a society riddled with self-serving opportunists who outcast certain groups for their political gain and to the detriment of the working class. The shark-infested waters that politics has become seeks out the weak and devours their hope. Following on from the 2016 referendum which witnessed the public inexplicably lied to and hoodwinked into believing that a better Britain was an independent Britain, the low SES group have seemingly had their heart ripped out of them, particularly the 18-34 manual/unemployed which saw a lowly 35% voter turnout in the 2017 General Election (Ipsos Mori 2017). As democratic institutions lose responsiveness and legitimacy to the aforementioned socioeconomic group due to their lack of engagement, higher socioeconomic groups profit as their vote, in many ways, becomes a national consensus. The question that needs addressing is how do we give a voice to the voiceless?

Fig.1. Significant decline among lower social class groups in GE 2017 from 2016 referendum (Ipsos Mori 2017)

Easy.

I get that we are prisoners of our reality and being 21 years old, some might consider the ship to have sailed in terms of encouraging political engagement for my age and socioeconomic demographic, however, the next generation of low SES can reap the rewards of engaging in politics through education and having the voice I never had. Having previously lived an estate and attended a low socioeconomic status school, the access to learning and exploring the political landscape was minimal at best; often PSCHE/ political classes were filler and an environment to complete homework of other classes.

This must change.

Is it too much to ask for schools to empower their students of low SES? Through the participatory process and giving students positions with a modicum of political value such as school councils as well as citizenship classes with specific learning outcomes, it encourages them to become politically engaged and consequently have a voice. Research by Professor Bryony Hoskins found that in over 6000 students, there were no significant differences in their access to citizenship classes by socioeconomic background, however their voluntary participation saw alarming differences as those from poor social backgrounds are found unwilling to volunteer in political activities (George 2018). Again, we must empower those who feel powerless, and this starts from the bottom up. Tackling this issue in schools will have a baring on higher education whereby the number of students who attend Russell Groups continue to dwindle as only 5 % of English teenagers who took A-levels or equivalent qualifications in 2012-13 and were eligible for free school meals were admitted to Russell Group universities the following year, which incidentally has increased to only 3% of students going to Russell Group (Havergal 2015). This slide in admittance into top unis becomes reflective of the political sphere, an evermore exclusive to those of a high SES and further fuel diplomatic democracy; whereby politicians turn out to be the most educated from the best universities and those who vote are the most educated and wealthy. Consequently, you have a large demographic that feels isolated and left out of politics.

Oh the irony of Theresa May. Having declared to fight the ‘burning injustices’ in British society and to prioritise the working class who were ‘just about managing’ a year prior to the 2017 General Election (George 2018), enter the mismanagement of Grenfell. In the face (or across the street) of Grenfell, lay the upper social class whereby in some parts of the borough, average income can ‘drop ten times as you cross the street’ (Guardian 2017). If any good came from this tragic circumstance is the finger being directed at the Tory government. A web of  social inequalities continues to unravel which ultimately leading the 18-34 low SES voicing their opinions on social media, showing images of the tragic event two years removed and reminding politicians that they have a voice and will continue to preach the social injustice they experience.

They use the people when they want to rise, as we treat a spirited horse when we want to mount him; – for a time we pat the animal upon the neck, and speak him softly; but once in the saddle, then come the whip and spur. – Christian Nestell Bovee – New York Writer

Fig.3. YouGov (2017) poll on what Brits think of the social classes. Working class have the nicest people.

For what the data tells us, it is pretty laughable what is exacted in society. Although the working class contribute most to society they are also overwhelmingly treated the worst by government. One might think “well why don’t they do something about it?” Reality is, once you have been politically repressed for a sustained period,  disillusion is inevitable. A quick dive into recent history shows this as 18-34 low SES group saw an encouraging voter turnout of 57% during the 2016 Referendum (6% increase from the 2015 GE) ultimately suffer a 4% fall for the 2017 (Ipsos Mori 2017).

They use the people when they want to rise, as we treat a spirited horse when we want to mount him – for a time we pat the animal upon the neck, and speak him softly; but once in the saddle, then come the whip and spur. – Christian Nestell Bovee.

In the face of Bovee’s damning statement, the mistreatment of the government will not resign our fate. In fact, the voiceless will become the ‘voiceful‘.

  8. By Lewis Krauskopf

NEW YORK, July 13 (Reuters) – Shares of U.S. healthcare companies are gaining favor as investors bank on their ability to weather rocky economic times and the stocks look more reasonably valued than other
    defensive sectors.

Healthcare has been the top-performing S&P 500 sector
over the past month, rising nearly 3% while the broader market
has fallen modestly. The group has fallen 8.7% so far this year, less severe than the nearly 20% drop for the benchmark S&P 500 overall.

Strategists at Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley and BofA Global Research are among those
favoring the healthcare sector, given that the companies’ businesses are expected
to hold up better than others should the economy face a downturn.

“We feel like it is one of the last opportunities to play defense at a reasonable price,” said
Walter Todd, chief investment officer at Greenwood
    Capital in South Carolina.

Greenwood is overweight healthcare stocks in its large-cap portfolios including shares of Johnson &
Johnson, Thermo Fisher Scientific and Pfizer Inc.

How healthcare companies are performing will become more clear in the coming days as second-quarter reports roll in, starting
on Friday with UnitedHealth Group Inc, the
largest U.S. healthcare company by market value.

Earnings in the healthcare sector – which includes large drugmakers,
medical equipment companies, health insurers and biotech firms – have outperformed
in recent recessionary periods. That makes them an attractive target for investors looking for assets that can weather a
potential downturn, as recession worries grow amid aggressive
monetary policy tightening from the Federal Reserve.

For example, while overall S&P 500 earnings fell for nine straight quarters during the Great Recession in 2007-2009, the healthcare sector posted earnings growth in those periods, according
    to Refinitiv IBES data.

Over the last 25 years, earnings per share for the sector have increased nearly 10% annually compared with 6.6% annual
growth for the S&P 500, while producing “much more consistent annual growth relative to the broader market,” according
to Eric Potoker, U.S. healthcare equity strategist in the CIO office of UBS
    Global Wealth Management.

“If they have healthcare needs, that is usually one of the last places that people will ration,” Potoker
    said.

Healthcare also remains relatively more attractive than other so-called defensive stocks based on standard valuation metrics.

Healthcare is trading at 15.7 times forward earnings estimates against
its long-term price-to-earnings average of 17.5 times, according
to Refinitiv Datastream. That represents a 10% discount.

Meanwhile, other defensive sectors are trading at premiums
relative to their historical valuations –
with utilities at a premium of over 30% and consumer staples at a 12% premium.

Unlike healthcare stocks, utilities and staples, at 19.4 times and 20.1 times, respectively, are also trading above the 16.1 times P/E ratio of the overall S&P 500.

“We find other traditionally defensive sectors, including utilities and staples, to be expensive relative to the broader market,” Tony DeSpirito, chief investment officer
of U.S. fundamental equities at BlackRock,
said in his third-quarter equity outlook in which he described
“an underappreciated opportunity in healthcare stocks.”

To be sure, should investors become more upbeat about the economy, that could lead them to leave
behind healthcare shares for more cyclically sensitive stocks such as financials
    or industrials.

Healthcare also for years has faced persistent investor concerns about regulatory changes, particularly related to potential U.S.
action to rein in prescription drug prices, which has created a cloud over the stocks.

In the coming months, Democrats in U.S. Congress could
try to pass a drug-pricing bill, and “biopharma stocks could be volatile if legislation progresses,” analysts at SVB Securities
    said in a note.

  14. The revolt against working from home has continued to gather pace after one of
Britain’s biggest banking institutions told employees that bonuses would be lost if their office attendance didn’t improve.

Senior staff at Lloyds Banking Group have been informed that
the firm may cut their bonuses should they fail to go into the office at least twice per week.

In the banking giant’s forthcoming round of bonuses,
attendance requirements will be a factor for roughly 20 per cent of its 60,000 staff.

The decision by Lloyds comes just a number of weeks after
the firm re-opened its City headquarters following an 18-month renovation period,
with the Old Broad Street location now housing in excess of 5,
    000 staff.

The Covid pandemic ushered in a new era of hybrid working at some of the UK’s largest companies,
but this move by Lloyds, was first reported
by The Guardian, highlights a growing appetite amongst firms to return to
    the pre-pandemic status quo.

Initially the means by which the white-collar economy could
continue to operate whilst strict lockdown measures were enforced,
remote working has since become the norm and a means of attracting workers with the
    carrot of workplace flexibility.

However, concerns over employee productivity, coupled
with the requirement to justify lofty rents for city office space,
have seen a host of major employers reverse course and attempt to divert
back towards an in-office work environment.

Lloyds are not the first bank to make a move against remote working, after Wall
Street firm Goldman Sachs issued a 2023 edict which declared staff must work all five days of the week in the office.

Senior staff at Lloyd’s Banking Group have been informed that the firm
may cut their bonuses should they fail to go
into the office at least twice per week

In the Office for National Statistics’ (ONS) most recent figures, it was shown that two in five UK workers enjoy at least some sort of remote working arrangement

Worries over a malaise in corporate culture and the lack of opportunity for new and younger staff members to
hone their skills under the supervision of experienced
colleagues are other reasons cited by leading firms for pursuing
    more in-office time.

Just last week, America’s biggest lender, JPMorgan Chase, told its staff that
they will be required to attend their offices in person five
    days a week from March.

Similarly, Amazon returned to in-office work only from the start of the new year.

Two out of five employees work from home some of all of the time

The revolt against working from home is not just confined to the corporate world: last week
the Metropolitan Police warned thousands of staff that their pay would be docked
for every day staff refuse to come into the office when they
    are contracted to do so.

These positions included 999 call handlers, PCSOs and child protection officers.

Office for National Statistics (ONS) figures suggest two in five UK workers enjoy a remote working arrangement.

This figure rose to two-thirds for people in management
    positions.

There were large discrepancies in remote working numbers
based on education level: almost 60 per cent of those with a degree work
some or all the time from home, whereas less than 10 per cent of those without third level qualifications
    did so.

Reacting to the new enforcement of their hybrid working policy,
a spokesperson for Lloyds stated the firm was ‘proud to offer an industry-leading approach to flexible working which
delivers many benefits for our colleagues while ensuring that
we are well-placed to deliver on our ambitious strategy to transform
our business and continue to deliver for our customers’.

  24. Another Chelsea win, another moment to illustrate the superhuman brilliance of
    N’Golo Kante.

Shortly before half-time, Kante did something almost unthinkable – he
miscontrolled the ball, sending it flying off 15 yards in front of him

    He’s playing really well.’

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte joked afterwards there is room
    for Kante to improve

Kante challenges the West Ham captain Mark Noble during Monday night’s match

The France international keeps a close eye on West Ham striker Andy Carroll during the game

Playing so well, in fact, that the (almost) unimprovable Kante must surely clean up at the Player of the Year awards
between now and the end of the season.

As Chelsea re-established a double-figure advantage at the top of the Premier
League following their 2-1 win at the London Stadium, their goalscorers
Hazard and Diego Costa are inevitably in the running for the
    gongs.

It’s a whole lot harder to earn recognition in such things when you don’t score goals or ping 60-yard passes, but Kante is deserving for the consistent excellence he continues to show.

Let’s look at the stats. Kante has made 94 tackles in his 26 Premier League games this season, the second highest in the division behind
    Everton’s Idrissa Gueye (102).

Kante ranks among the Premier League’s best tacklers and interceptors this season

  27. At least 28 people including ‘many children’ are dead after a bus carrying Coptic
Christians was attacked in Egypt. Pictured

Egyptian forces have struck bases in which militants who
waged a deadly attack against Christians have been trained.

President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi said fighter jets struck militant bases in eastern Libya in retaliation for an attack by
suspected Islamic State militants that killed 28 Christians and wounded another 22 south of Cairo.

The officials said the warplanes targeted the headquarters of the Shura Council in the city of Darna, where local militias are known to be
linked to al Qaida, not the Islamic State group.

Mr el-Sissi warned that Egypt will strike at any bases that train militants who
wage attacks in the country, wherever they may be.

Up to 10 masked attackers dressed in military uniforms stopped a convoy in Egypt province, 140 miles south
of Cairo, as the group was heading towards Saint Samuel the Confessor Monastery in Maghagha to
    pray.

The gunmen, who arrived in three four-wheel drive vehicles, used automatic weapons to spray
bullets at the convoy before fleeing. A health ministry official said a ‘large number’ of victims were children.

The group was travelling in a convoy of two buses and a truck from the nearby province of Bani Suief when the mass shooting happened.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, which came on the eve
of the holy Muslim month of Ramadan.

Mr el-Sessi also directly appealed to US President Donald Trump to take the
lead in the fight against global terror.

    the shooting

Shocking pictures have started to emerge showing bodies covered with black sheets near the scene of
    the atrocity

At least 28 people including children are dead and 25 injured after masked
gunmen opened fire on a bus carrying Coptic Christians in Egypt, it has
emerged. Pictures show people grieving at the scene

Relatives of those slain in the attack were pictured carrying
their coffins at a funeral service at Abu Garnous Cathedral in Minya, Egypt,
    today

The coffins were decorated and the service was
attended by thousands of Christians, pictured

As the funeral, pictured, was taking place, Egyptian forces bombed jihadi ‘training camps’ in Libya

In a televised address just hours after the attack, Mr el-Sissi said ‘I direct my
appeal to President Trump: I trust you, your word and your ability to make fighting
    global terror your primary task.’

He also repeated calls that countries which finance, train or arm extremists be punished.

In response, Mr Trump condemned the attack blaming ”evil organisations of terror’ and ‘thuggish ideology’.

In a strongly worded statement, Mr Trump referred to the ‘merciless slaughter of Christians’ and said a ‘wound is inflicted upon humanity’ every time innocent blood is spilled.

He said the attack by masked militants on a bus taking the worshippers
to a monastery should bring nations together to crush ‘evil organisations of
    terror’.

It comes after ISIS claimed responsibility for three deadly
church attacks in December and April that claimed the lives of dozens of people.

The jihadists threatened more attacks against the
Arab country’s Christians, who make up around 10 per cent of its population of about 90 million.

Pictures of the bus aired by state television showed the vehicle riddled with machine-gun fire and its windows shot out.

The group was travelling in two buses and a truck to St Samual Monastery, south of Cairo from the nearby province of Bani Suief

Ambulances were parked around it as bodies lay on the ground, covered with black plastic
    sheets.

Security forces launched a hunt for the attackers, setting
up dozens of checkpoints and patrols on the desert road.

The grand imam of al-Azhar, Egypt’s 1,000-year-old centre of Islamic
learning, said the attack was intended to destabilise the country.

‘I call on Egyptians to unite in the face of this brutal terrorism,
‘ Ahmed al-Tayeb said from Germany, where he was on a visit.

President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi called a meeting of security officials, the state news agency
    said.

The United Nations Security Council condemned the attack in Egypt
    ‘in the strongest terms’.

In a statement released Friday, the Council expressed its ‘deepest sympathy’ and condolences to the families of the
victims and emphasized that the perpetrators need to be brought to justice.

‘Terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace
    and security,’ the statement said.

Lebanon’s militant Hezbollah group also condemned
the attack, saying ‘it is a new crime added to the criminal record of a murderers’ gang’.

Egypt has been fighting ISIS militants who have waged an insurgency, mainly focused in the
volatile north of the Sinai Peninsula but there have been also attacks on the mainland.

The country has seen a wave of attacks on its Christians, including twin suicide bombings in April and another attack in December on a Cairo church that left over 75 people dead and scores wounded.
ISIS in Egypt claimed responsibility for them and vowed more attacks.

Late last month Pope Francis visited Egypt in part to show his support for
the Christians of this Muslim majority Arab nation who have
been increasingly targeted by Islamic militants.

During the trip, Francis paid tribute to the victims of the December bombing at Cairo’s
St. Peter’s church, which is located in close proximity to the St.

Mark’s cathedral, the seat of the Coptic Orthodox Church.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, which came on the eve of the
    holy Muslim month of Ramadan

Witnesses said the gunmen arrived in four-wheel drive vehicles dressed in military uniforms
before spraying the bus using automatic weapons

Images broadcast on state television show a badly damaged bus with blown-out windows and covered on the inside with
    blood

The bus was riddled with bullet holes in the latest attack on Egypt’s Coptic
Christians after a series of bombings on Palm Sunday

Hundreds of people rushed to the nearby hospital in Maghagha city, near
al-Minya, as the wounded were brought in for treatment

While some waited for news of their loved ones outside the hospital, others waited to carry out the bodies
    of those who died

Following the pope’s visit, the ISIS affiliate in Egypt vowed to escalate attacks against Christians, urging Muslims to steer clear of Christian gatherings and western embassies as they are
    targets of their group’s militants.

Egypt’s Copts, the Middle East’s largest Christian community, have repeatedly
complained of suffering discrimination, as well as outright attacks, at hands of the country’s
    majority Muslim population.

Over the past decades, they have been the immediate
    targets of Islamic extremists.

    They rallied behind general-turned-president, Abdel-Fattah
el-Sissi, in 2013 when he ousted his Islamist predecessor
Mohammed Morsi, who hails from the Muslim Brotherhood group.

Attacks on Christian homes, businesses and churches subsequently
surged, especially in the country’s south.

The Christians were on the way to Monastery of St Samuel the Confessor, in Minya Province (pictured) when they were attacked on Friday

On April 9, 45 people were killed in twin church bombings claimed by ISIS
