Lecture 11: The One With the Presentation

I created a presentation about YouTube and the use of it within schools as a learning resource,

Youtube is a good resource to use within schools because it enables the children to visually see what they are learning about, and with further in depth information it triggers and encourages more and more questions about that topic.

I have included speaker notes within the presentation about the effects and impacts of YouTube within schools and relating that to theory.

Reading: The one with the moderation

This reading, Salmon (2002) is based on how teachers moderate the content that the children are using. This is done in a 5 step model, which is shown below. This helps the teacher to control what the children are accessing and viewing on the internet, and how what they are viewing is impacting their learning.

In our Google Classroom the moderator is going to be the teacher who is using the resource, since they are going to be in control of the content which is going to be on the classroom. As an example, the teacher is able to find all of the relevant links, this is mainly due to the age of the children- they are going to be very young and therefore not able to understand if the content that they are searching for is going to help them learn, or even safe for them to view.

Following the 5 steps, our resource first needs to be ‘welcoming and encouraging’, this means that the children are able to feel comfortable whilst using it and know what they need to do. We have done that by making sure that all of the instructions are verbal, in sound clips, rather than writing so that the children are able to simply click onto it and listen to what they need to do. But, we have also included a range of colours and pictures to make the children feel as comfortable when using the site as possible.

Taking the children’s age into consideration again I would ensure that all of the children feel welcome and able to use the resource confidently before moving up to the second stage. The second stage is to ‘familiarise and provide bridges between cultural, social and learning environments, this means that the teacher will be ensuring that the children are creating a safe online footprint when they are talking and communicating with the world outside of the resource. However, the only danger that the children have is using the external links to YouTube, which would expose them to the comments and suggestions. Within the resource itself there is only the opportunity for the children to be able to talk to each other, therefore if there are any issues it will most likely be an internal problem.
